The Return of the
Tow-Boat
Canals are moving freight faster than the
railroads. Barge freight makes the trip
from Philadelphia to New York in 24 hours.
Railroad freight may take ten days.,
7,000,000 tons of freight will be carried year
ly on canals between Philadelphia and New
York, when, the last link in the middle At
lantic projects of the Atlantic Deeper Water
ways Association is completed.
This new channel to business northward is
the projected trans-Jersey Canal. It will
connect the Delaware River with Raritan
Bay and New York Harbor.
It will bring to Philadelphia cheaper sand,
stone, cement and other building material;
paper and paper pulp from the North ; Cham
plain iron ore by way of the Hudson, and
many manufactured -products. It will effect
a saving in time, enhancement of water front
property and a cheaper shipping route.
Now is the time to finish the job. Every
Congressman of Pennsylvania New Jersey
and New York should actively support this
project, so necessary from both a commer
cial and protective viewpoint.
