NEWS" OF FINANCIAL WORLD NEW YORK AND PHILADELPHIA STOCK QUOTATIONS
STOCKS MOVE UP AGAIN
DESPITE MONEY CRISIS
Heavy Volume of Cash Sales to Establish Losses in the Year's
Income Account
New York, Dec. 31. Thr year closed
with a distinctly strong stork market
toilny. Itcgnrdtes of further indica
tions of tight money higher in ices were
established nil through (he list. although
interest run strongly to the Industrial
(liision Mnuy of the traiinc tions
weio on n cash bnsis, evidently for the
purpose of adjusting jear-end income
account. In order to bnve the transac
tions put through before the new jear
so that they can be mnde ii matter
ot record in 1011). all veiling of stocks
on the last day of the jcar must be
for cash mid immediate delivery. To
sell the "regular way" would cam the
transaction over into 1020. since de
livery would not be made until Friday.
Such selling for cash in order to cs
tablish losses proceeded In heavj vol
ume throughout the morning, but with
out effect upon quoted allies. Pinin the
very outlet the trend was stiongly up
ward and this was sustained during the
first hour notwithstanding there uns no
supply of call money in sight until long
afler II o'clock The lcnewnl rate was
again fixed at l."i per cent, the same as
jeslenlay, hut was virtually ignored
At the opening advances of I to .'5
points were made bv the leading oils,
shippings, motor specialties and food
issues American Woolen, the spec
tacular feature of recent sessions, added
almost fi points to jesterday's sub
stantial gain, which was later extended
to more than J (I points. The early
gains, however, were substantially ex
tended in all parts of the industrial
division. Noteworthy features of
strength included Texas Co., Mexican
Petroleum, United States Rubber, (ion
eral Motors, Crucible Steel, Wnrthtng
tnn Tump. Kndicott-.Tohnson, Interna
tional Paper, American International,
American Sugar and Industrial Alcohol,
win re gross gains' langed from 2 to al
most fi points.
The railroad and tobacco shares mndo
only moderate advances, while coppers
were neglected. Some profit-taking de
veloped around midday, but the market
lost little ground.
.ludging from the manner in which
some of the Industrial specialties were
marked up the short Interest experi
enced a very uncomfortable day. Al
though no concentrated drives were
made, yet effoits to buy stocks back
encountered vigorous competitive bid
ding. This influenced a rather free cov
et lug movement, and was in main
hugely responsible for the higher level
of prices. Public interest still re
mained of small dimensions.
Tim money market followed its
recent course, call loans advancing to
20 per cent at mie'dnj. Aside fiom u
temiiornry reduction of uetivitj, the
higher rate exerted no unfavorable in
fluence Amciicim Woolen increased
its gain to MM points and steels,
equipments and specialties were con
siderably higher.
Some ot the more extensive gains
were i educed bj 2 to S points later,
when call loans again lose to 25 per
cent but otherwise advances wcic well
maintained.

FURTHER ADVANCES MADE
BY LEADING LOCAL SHARES
U. G. J. Prominent Feature, Selling Up to 55 With Quarterly
.Dividend of $1 Off
There was nnolhrr hie mnrlrel fne tlin
local Stocks todnv. nlthnueli he mnrVef
did not measure nuito up to the stantl-
nru established yesterday. The rone,
however, continued distinctly strong,
and n generally higher range of prices
was registered.
Bond dealings fell off consldcrablv,
which, vvitlt the slackening in the stock
trading, was apparently due to the com
pletion of tho "to-establish-losscs"
bales.
United Gas Improvement wnq Hie
leading feature in activity nnd strength.
There was a little short of nn urgent
demand for the stock in the early trad
ing, when tho price was advanced to
TO. Including the $1 quarterly divi
dend, which was taken off today, this
was a net advance ot ;i;,k, over yester
day's final sule, and S-lXiO from the
low-water murk of Monday. There
was also a continued good demand for
Pennsylvania Itailioad. hut with little
change in price.
Scarcity of stock wa responsible for
the shnrn advances of SS nnd SIfi in
General Asphalt common and preferred
to 118 and 180 respectively. Klcctrlc
storage unttcry was linn at 1.17,
The entire list, however, showed a
tendency to move up during the morning
when the best prices of the day were
mode. Union Traction was $1 higher
nt !)4; Westmoreland Cool and Amer
ican Gas made similar gains at 73 nnd
fin. Philadelphia Electric wVis firm at
Sl-li. while Philadelphia Traction
touched CO.
The mat ket turned dull after mid
day, but apart from the $1 decline Iri
V. G. I. to fi-l, $3, drop in American
gas prices cliewherc were generally well
siifitaitied,
The publication of the hank clearings,
for the month of. December nnd for 10111
furnished much food for thought and
gave striking testimony of the high
speed tcn-ion of the hanking machinery
during the yeoi just closing.
The total turnover of checks through
the clearing hoiie for the month wa?
.i.',ti,iiii,rioii, wnne mr me jear me
grund totul reached !f:2,0(U,ri88,0o5,
both breaking all record") in the history
of lociil banking. The gain for the
month over last jear wuh 10.02 per
cent, while for hc full twelve months
the gain over 1018 was 10.70 per cent.
Such figures speak louder than words
unci ore living pioofs of tremendous
volume of business now being done
throughout 1 lie length and breadth of
the land. They nie real and reliable
barometers of trade.
