"Head!" answered 1'eggy, Hilly and

nnd tickled, and tickled. So sound asleep ,
were the trees that for a moment the

little sighing voltes sounded ftom the
hearts of the trees the voices of the
Tree Spirits:
"Our feet are tickling! Our feet are
tickling! That's a sign of spring! Our

greet the sunshine, the birds, nnd the
Warm spring breezes."
Thus sighed the Tree Spiiits, und at

around iu the ground for the sap that
would arise up through them to the
trunk of the trees nnd thus o-i above to
put life into the bare limbs that were
Bwaying in tnc wintry breeze
Here and there through the forest .
darted Tickle Toe Tiniuij , J'cgg.v
Billy and Judge Owl, and wherever
their nimble feathers touched, a tree
began to squirm und stretch. It was
Jolly, jolly sport seeing the giant trees
rousing out of their, comfortable snooze,
nnd thrashing around blind! as it try
ing to dance a welcome to spring.
l'cggy, glancing up. saw the roots
of the lowers lemainiiig unnioving amid
all t)iis confusion. She stretched up
her feather and tickled them. They
curled up nnd the Honor spiuts diows
ily nwakened.
"Our toes are tickling." they sang.
"Spring is here ! We will ni ise to give
him happy greeting." Instantly the
flower spirits began to push their way
upward through the froz.cn earth.
"Ho' Ho! They'll freeze their noses
when thev gel up in the snow," laughed
Tickle Toe Timmy. l'cggy hadn't
thought of that. It would be dangerous
for the delicate flowers. to expose their
heads to the blasts of old Father Win
ter. They'd he nipped off in a second.
"Wait! Wait! Spring isn't -here
Tet!" sho cried. Rut the flower spir
its paid no nttention to Iter. Perhaps
they didn't understand human talk.
Just then came a surprising happen
ing. Tickle Toe Timmy tiekle'd ft
Btriped, slender stick and the stick be
gan to wriggle, and a, head arose. It
was a snoozing garter snnkc. The head
of the snake darted toward Hilly and
Billy dodged behind a tangle of tree
root limbs nnd right into a sleeping
form.
"Hiss! Hiss! Spring is here!" said
the snake.
. "What's that?" said a sharp voice as
tho sleeping form sat up quickly. "Who
says spring is here, when winter isn't
half over?"
"Hun!" shouted Tickle Toe Timni

"Mother Nature Is awoke!"
Mother Nature's Court
PKGGV, Hilly and Judge Owl fled
through the Underground forest at
the warning of Tickle Ton Tlniinv.
"Hurry, hurry!" Tickle Toe Timmy
urged at their heels. "Mother Nature
Is lovely when she is lovely, but beware
when she Is angry 1"
l'cggy uud Hilly tried to put speeil
into their legs, but they seemed scarcely
to move. The trees which they had
awakened with their mischievous
tickling were now squirming their loots
around and the roots caught the feet of
the runners and tripped them. Again
and again l'cggy and Hillv fell, only to
.lump up nnd dart forward again as they
heard the video of Mother Nature call
ing from behind than.
"Whnt'R the matter! AMni has
awakened mj children in the midst of
their sleep? What ho, my guards!
Mischief-makers are alun.id. Seek them
out und bring them before me !'
And now l'cggy and Hilly ljcnrd a
loud murmuring and muttering and
squealing ahead of them. They stopped
shoit and hid behind a big loot just in
time to escape running into a crowd of
Underground Folks, among whom were
Daddy Mole and the whole Hnbbit
family.
The Underground Folks swarmed up
lo the tiee whence had come the voice of
Mother Nature. There they halted and
a Jf f til chant arose from them.
"We are here. Mother Nature. We

be up to some trick while we slumbered,
but 1 dropped off to sleep before I could
get after him. Hring him before me
that I may pass judgment upon him
and upon those who have aided him in
his tickling."
Tickle Toe Timmy, still saucy and
grinning, turned to llee when ho heard
this, but he hadn't moved a step when
a Mole policeman grabbed him. An
other Mole policeman grabbed l'cggy,
another Hilly nnd another Judge Owl.
In less time than it takes to toll, they
were dragged before Mother Nature
"Hero nio the mischief-makers,"
squealed the Mole policemen.
Mother Nature looked at Peggy, Hilly,
Judge Owl and Tickle Too Timmy and
her frown grew darker.
"So you are the rascals who have
sought to i upset my laws," she said,
"What have you to say for your
selves?" (Friday will bn told how Mother
