On Thursday Charles ICucnzo do Bergen, nf St Moritz, Switzerland, skated be fore a number of people who had been given the high sign ; in other words told n thn q. t. what might happen, and to were there in force ; and lie certainly Hid cut some wonderful fieures. Mrs. JosodIi Chamnan and Mrs. Ronald Barlow and various other Main Joiners were at the Golf Club on Thurs day to watch Mr. de Bergen. TSN'T It funny how rumors go around ISow every one has been all agog over an engagement which they say will bo announced at a party very soon. Some one who evidently knew nothing about it started the rumor and passed it on to others, nnd one of these gossip effects started that grow and grow and grow, nnd though the-person who told me said he was not sure it was so, ho thought it was. And I said "Well, I wouldn't be surprised," and altogether every one has gotten quite excited over it. And now I hear from bome one else that it Isn't so at all. So what nra I to think? What do you think ? The She in question is' -tall and fair, with bright blue eyes and golden hair. Don't irind if I wax poetical once in a while. It relieves the monotony of things. Which reminds mo of a house I saw recently which is being finished ns a residence and which has many rows of straight windows, and then over the staircase the windows arc dropped about a foot lower than bthcrs across the front. I asked why the thusness and was told by the architect "It's to relieve the monotony." It certaiily re lieved it all right, but I'd hate to tell you what it looked like in consequence. Schmidt, first violin; Louis Angcloty. second violin; Alfred Lorcnz, viol, and AVillinm A. Schmidt, cello, gave the first of a scries of three cham ber music concerts at AVithcrspoon Hal Inst evening before a good-sized audience. They began with n little-known quar tet by Felix Blumcnfeid, n contem pornneous Russian composer The work follows the classic stylo closely, nnd U simple enough in construction and in Rk harmonic and melodic scheme to bo readily understandable at first hearing, something thnt cannot be said of many of the quartets of the last twenty-five j ears. Its themes aie definito and aro developed along the customary lines. It is not one of the grent quartet produc tions like the Brahms quartet in It flat, but it is melodious and well worth nn occasional public hearing. Two other compositions were ulxi presented, the Italian Serenade of Hugti AVolf, which is much more Spanish than Italian iu (its first themes, and the D flat quartet of Dohnanyl, a work of moro pretensions than solidity, Tho AVolf quartet was originally com posed for string orchestra, but has achieved such popularity in the quartet form that it is now rarely presented In the original. It is ono of the few works; which sound better in a revised than in the original form. The quartet played beautifully, with a fine quality of tone, perfect balance and blending ot the parts and n unllv of performance that can be attained only through hard and intelligent re hearsal. Tho Italian Serenade is u very difficult and treacherous compost tion to play, but it went through without un apparent flaw. Tho members of the quartet havo high ideals regarding quartet playing and aro evidently work ing toward a realization of those ideals without any thought of "playing to the gallery" or of anything except of per forming the works selected in tho best manner possible.
