SETTLES SUIT AGANST PACKERS BIg Fivo" Agreo3 to Drop Many Sido Lines Jn Partial Dissolution S DECREE WILL BE ENTERED By lho Associated Press Washington, Dec. 18. Settlement of tho anti-trust cases begun by the De partment ot Justice ngnlnst the five big Chicago packers is understood to have been reached out of court. Attorney General Palmer is expected to nnnounce the details late today. , Negotiations between the packers and the government havo been going on for ttoma time. One of the plans was the withdrawal of the parkers from Ride. lines, such as the wholesale grocery business, which reports of the federal trado commission hnvo charged them with seeking to dominate. The packers represented that tliev had already begun to withdraw from the grocery business and arc willing to darry.tho plan still further. Plans iiImj havo been considered for the separation of the corporations into separate enti ties. During the day Attorney (Jcneral Palmer held a long conference with Senators Kenyon and Kcndrick, au thors of measures for government regu lation of the ment packing industry, which are before the Senate agriculture committee. After the coiifeirnce Senator Kenyon (iaid separation of tln packer from other businesses would nut cause liinf or Senator Kcnrick to abandon their efforts to hnvo their bills enacted. Sen ator Kenyon planned to iiie n state ment late today setting furth liw views and commending the work of the lp partment of .lustice in obtaining the agreement with the packers. Chicago, Dec. 18. flly A. ,')-"A jozen or more important did" line in dustries of the Chicago meat packers involving investments of many millions Of dollars will bo disposed of under the stipulated decree soon to be entered in the United States Court at 'Wash ington on motion of Attorney fieneral Palmer. While representatives of the packers today declined to discuss the details of tho decree under which the packers in the future will be required to confine tho business activities to the produc tion of meat, poultry, butter, eggs and cheese, it was learned from an authori tative source that the outline of the plan had been agreed upon. Among the lines of business from which it is said the packers will bo ordered to withdraw under the .tipn lated court decree are the following: father, canned fruito and vegetables, cap, cleansing powders, groceries, fer tilizers, cold storage, fish, refrigerator car lines, glue, sporting goods and the control of stock yards. Representatives of the packcrb ex press the view that under the proposed plan they might continue to manufac ture soap and fertilizer, as they are natural products of the meat-packing industry. Some doubt was expressed as to whether cleansing powder is an animal product. Oao purpose of the proposed reorganization, it is said, is to prevent tho packers from engaging in the wholesale grocery business. Swift & Co. already have segregated its South American and Australian ineat business, its fruit and vegetable canning industry nnd its manufacture . 4f leather. Wilson & Co. recently dis posed of Its wholesale, grocery lines to re New Tork firm. Dissolution of the wholesale grocery interests of the "Big Five" packers would not seriously affect any of them, Louis F. Swift, head of Swift & Co., said today. Later Mr. Swift, in a formal state ment, said: 'Referring to tho decree in question, Sjwift & Co. hnve already made a dis solution of their leather business as well as the ownership of Libby, McNeil 4; Iibby (a fruit and meat-canning subsidiary) and nlso their packing house business in South America and Australia, and have been anticipating spmething of this kind for some time. "Our earnings will not bo unfavor ably affected as tho lines prohibited havo not been especially profitable. It will give us more nvallable cash capital for the-real meat business and its allied products." TWO DIE IN HOTEL BLAZE Firemen Hampered by Bitter Cold In Boston Residential District Uoston, Ppc. IS.
