CONTINUED LIGHT SELLING
IN THE LOCAL FA VORITES
Moderate Offerings Kept Prices Within a Shadow of tin
Bottom Prices of the Year
It wns in the continued heavy Kelt-
,inK of Pennsylvania Knllroad and United
dfts Improvement that interest centered
in today's local market. Tho nil-important
development, however, from n
local viewpoint wns tho weekly Phila
delphia Clearing House statement show
ing for the first time slnco the inaugu
ration of federal reserve system of the
extinguishing of the excess reserve of
the Clearing House institutions. In
other words, Instead of a surplus above
the legnl requirements the locnl in
stitutions showed a deficit of $230,000.
This undoubtedly will be speedily cor
rected, but lt is a hcrious question
whether the cqulibrlum of the local
money market cun now be restored
without further drastic steps in tho
liquidating of outstanding hank credits.
The incident would possibly bo
pnssed over lightly ordinarily, but just
at this time lt served to emphasize the
serious stringency In money market
conditions and practically wipes tAit
the last straw of hope of any nppreci
iihlc easing of money market conditions
during the balance of tho current ml
ciidcr jenr. After the turn of the new
j car matters may tnke a turn for
tho better, but it looks liko a rough and
rocky road ahead for some little time.
The selling of both Pennsylvania
Railroad and United uns Improvement
continued on what could be culled .1
liberal scale, One block of 1200 of
United Gns Improvement changed
hands during (he dny, while tho total
sales aggregated approximately ;t400
shnrcs. Nearly 2000 of Pennsjlvnnii
were turned over. In cither ense, there
wns little change in price, both holding
fractionally above the low-water mark
made Inst week.
