NEW CHAMP. RUNS 70
By JAMES S. CAKOLAN
NOTHING was at stake. Nothing
was depcnuVn' upon tho outcome
and nobody cared.
Despite the uulmportanco of the shot,
Edgar f. Ralph, of IHghtstown. N. J.,
never gave more time, attention or
thought to a play. He gavo an excel
lent imnersonatlon of "much ado about
nothing."
First he looked over the table, the
position of every on a of the fifteen
ivories vms carefully noted, tho cue wan
artistically massaged, tho table surveyed
once again and then time was taken out
for a short rest while Mr. Ralph gazed
at the score board which read some
thing like this:
Ralph Greenleaf
i S3 ISO
A second time Mr. Ralph majestically
strode toward the head of the table
where the break always1 takes place.
Edgar "scented" a combination, lea
minutes was lost in the hopeless searcli
for a possible piny.
Jlalps Smiles
Finally n smile brightened his usually
dull and serious visage. He glanced
at the referee in the hope that tho
iciclelike Peterson would smilo ap
proval and recognition. All Edgar re
ceived inreturn was a scowl from that
frigid person. .
Mr. Ralph was dying Kme. Per
haps It would bo his last visit to the
green this championship tourney, and
that last vu.lt must be wo(ih while.
Edgar wasn't going to take any chance.
A second smile found its away across
his unwrinkled face. A third visit was
made to the head of the table. A care
ful examination revealed what was only
too apparent to the spectator in the
most remote section of the hall that
there was only one ivory loso and that
the ten.
Great Discovery
Mr. Ralph made this wonderful dis
covery after eighteen minutes ten and
two-fifths seconds of concentrated de
liberation and exhaustive research.
Ttnon it mu Hint Edcar confioentially
returned to that sector where the cue
ball wns waiting quietly and patiently.
Without a tremble in his coarse
vnl. he called forth in clear, cold

Ralph took deliberate, careful aim,
,,,! tni.In nnn nf the nrettiest muffs,
boots or errors ever executed in a title
tnnrnnv Tt wns n elorioiiH tinnle.
This proved to be Ralph's farewell
visit to the tabic and all this careful
. nrenarntion was not futile, for It
clinched n tie for him for last place.
Tho Oilier Ralph
Ralph Grccnlcnf, the other and minor
part of the act, did nothing more than
make a high run of seventy, comploto
the match In eighteen innings nnd
clinch the nationnl pocket billiard
championship, winning by the oneT-sid
-Eil figure of 'lKf to 53.
All credit must bo given to game
guys. Edgar Ralph proved a regular
hero in more ways than one. It was
against Edgar that Renny Allen set
" a new world 8 nigh-run marK oi eigniy
one, and it was against this same Ed
nr that' Greenleaf beat his own high-
rnn itinrlt with a tfeventv nnd came
close to shattering the one established
bv Allen.
Edgar posed beautifully during the
long run. Ho shifted position with each
new rack and changed his cue with the
grace and ease of an artist accustomed
to long waits uecween innings.
Misses Rig Chance
Greenleaf had the chance of his young
career to set n new mark. Ho was in
A

'icellent stroke and there seemed to dc
tin limit tn his run. He executed. a won
derful shot in recording His slxtlew
point, when he made n kiss shot on the
thirteen ball .off the six ivory itito the
corner pocket.
Everything went smoothly until he
accounted tor nis seventiein poini. n
made the point easily, but his cue ball
became reckless and painfully took ref
uge behind the two ball against fhe head

irreeted this position. Benny Allen
shifted twice, then gazed In tho oppo

play for the corner, but it was a tough
Greenleaf made one of his hasty
shots, the ball hit the far rail and glid
ed damagingly away from tho pocket.
Thus ended Grsenleaf's big opportun
ity 'to set up a mark that could have
stood a lot of battering.
Second Place Open
Now that Greenleaf has been in
stalled the national pocket billiard
king, which brings with it a $1500
nurse and a $2400 yearly salary from
the Drunswick-Balke-Collendcr Co.,
he will complete his schedule against
I?yton tonight, then make prepara
tions for his tour of tho United
States. At least seventy-five of the
ninit (mnortant cities will be visited.
Second nlace is still open. The man
who will accompany Greenleaf on the
trip will be decided this afternoon for
the winner of the Allen-Geogh match
will receive a $1250 prize and second
honors. Third money or $1000 will be
awarded to the loser. This match starts
at 2:80
Tliero Is a triple tie for fourth place
between Seaback, Kreuter and Concan

games, each winning five and losing
four. They will divide the fourth prize
,of $750 three ways.

New York. Dec. 13. The executive
committee of tho United States Na
tional Lawn Tennis Association held
Its annual session nftlje Waldorf-Astoria
yesterday afternoon. While tho
committee wns In session it ratified the
ranking list for the year of 1010. The
list, however, will not be issued for pub

It is almost n certainty that' William
M. Johnston, the dashing California,
1ms been ranked ns the premier tennis
player of the American contingent.
Johnston won tho national champion
ship, in which he defeated Gerald Pater,
son, the great Australian expert, and
William T. Tilden, of Philadelphia.
THdcn has probably earned the hon
ors as the second best player, with
Kichard Norrls Williams 2d next to
him. Others who arc probably placed
among the "first ten" are Wallace
Johnson, of Philadelphia; S. Howard
Voshell, of thlscity; Nate Nlles, of
Boston ; Ichiya Kumagae, of Japan, and
Fred Alexander.
It is said that Vincent Richard, the
"boy marvel" of Tonkers, has earned

The
CAREER OF ANY MASCOT
A SERIES OF WORRIES
Hughey McLoon, Once With
Athletics, Later in Basjtcl-l
ball, Finds Plenty of Trou
bles and Cares '
THK life of a big league mascot is
just one worry nftcr another.
The duties of a manager or n plnyer
arc nothing compared with the burden
carried by that very important part of
the machine the mascot.
Think of the Importance of his job!
He must be there long before game time
to see that everything Is going right.
Tho manager always reports to him,
then the regulars and next- the sub
stitutes. He must consult the trainer and
learn the condition of the men. He
must confer with the mannger before
nny change is made during the tepid or
heated struggles.
The big league mascot is n combina
tion manager-trainer-coarh. He es
corts every player to the plate and he
leads the grsnd march to the bench
every time n player Is lucky enough to
complete the circuit nnd bank a run.
Then again he has that very Im
portant job of attending to the bats.
He must assort the ulllows carefully,
be careful not to have them crossed
or the handles placed in the wrong di
rection, for the players nrc n super
stitious lot and the mascot knows it. In
fact, he Is just as superstitious.
Hut it remained for one combination
director to ndd new burdens to the
ever-growing list. Now take the case
of Hugh,ey McLoon, rntrd as the king
of mascots.
Hughey is a Quaker Cite nrodnet.
He started his career with tho Mc
Carinel A. A. He displayed such abil
ity that he attracted the attention of
Connie Mack and nftcr much effort was
persuaded to desert the amateurs and
become and out-and-out professional.
This was In 1M4.
Hughey joined the Athletics in 1015
nnd for three kensons suffered terribly.

llUOlIUY McLOON
He wns with the A's when they were
losing nnd every mascot knows thnt
there's nothing worse than trailing
niong with a trailer.
So Hughey began to seek a change.
He wns a grent pal of Scott Perry, the
big Mnck pitcher. When Perry joined
the Chester Ship team in the fall of
1SI17, Hughey accompnnicd him. From
tills time dnled the absence of Hughey
from the A's.
He did plenty of semi-professional
mnscntlng Inst season, but Hughey, as
a big leaguer, did not relish life In the
minors.
During the last season he has been
mascnting for Frank Poth. He worked
well for a time with the North Philly
Americans nnd when the mnnagement
changed hands, Hughey moved to (!er
mnntown along with Poth.
Only n few days ngo Connie, aroused
by the success of the classy mascot,
uroto nnd Informed the star that he
was welcome to make his headquarters
at Stiibe Pnrk ut any time.
So don't be surprised to see Hugh
McLoon, king of the mascots, doing
duty nt Twenty-first and Lehigh next

P. M. C. Dropped for Virginia
Military Institute on Red and

AWARD VARSITY LETTERS
Columbia and the Virginia Military
Institute, two new nnmes in Tenn's
football annals, will meet the lied nud
Mine on the gridiron next fall. In re
vealing (he outcome of the dlscuiilon
held In n meeting of the Athletic Coun
cil of Ihe t'niversity of Pennsylvania
yesterday three glaring alterations In
the football schedule were In evidence
the inauguration of contests with the
nbovc teams nnd the dropping of the
Pennsylvania Military College.
The balance of the schedule is com
prised of the old guards, Lafayette,
Stnte, Pittsburgh. Dartmouth and Cor
nell, with Delaware, Ilucknell and
Swarthinorc, who were seen in action
on 1'rnnklin Field last fall.
Twenty-four of the varsity men re
ceived the coveted varsity "P," posd.
bly the most desirable symbol of athletic
achievement at Penn. Pard Penrce and
Hen Derr were the only members of the
team, whose playing justified the nwnrd.
hut who were denied the distinction.
The former is admittedly n profrsslnnal,
and in his case the award of n vnrsity
letter is beyond question as it woulil
embody recognition of professionalism.
The big Dakntan, Derr, never confessed
to the nccusatlons, but stands in such
nn unfavorable light that the council
could not grnnt him n letter without
submitting the University's reputation
to great risk.
The varsity men to receive the var
sity "P." ns proposed by the football
committee nnd npproved by the Athletic
Council, arc as follows:
Captain Hell, Hrunner, L. AVrnv,
Thomas, Dieter, Tltzol. Little, H. Mil
ler. Hopper, It. Miller. Neylon. Slav
nard, Ornves. AVithington, O'Cnrmnn,
Itex Wrny. Kills, Harvey, Hroun. ,toc
Straus. StcNichol, Crawford, Frank.
After withstanding the brunts of dally
scrimmages with the vnrsity team, the
following members of the scrubs arc
awarded their varsity uumbers: Ito
setsky, Wilford, Ilourns, Copelnnd,
Hradly, (Jotwals, Cochran. Fritz Straus,
Tatnal. Townsend. SlcCormlck, Stip
plee. Itity. SlcCnll, Plnney. Wolfe,
Hoswcll, Davidson, Tnvies, Davidson.
Farres. Slcllvainc, Quigley, Stelner,
SIcAnnlly, Brudcr and flnrdy, Aknho
shi, Wentz, Temple, Leonard. Kroch
ncr. Hagerty. Coward and Whltchlll.
The members of the undefeated fresh
men eleven to be awarded their fresh
man numerals arc :
Captain Don Orlfun, Colder, Erdlets,
Fnrrell, Wilson, Heckus. Iliben, Arm
strong, Leahnm, drove, Wntkins, titles,
,T. Stiller, Denver. Thurmaii, Smith,
Sawyer, Gove, Humboldt, Sweeney,
Humes, Itobb, French, Spenrs, Watson,
Cnrrigan, Stathewson and Frag.
Olander to Lea'd Southern
At a banquet of the footbntl team last
night at Coach Dean Johnston's house
Olander, a veteran of three seasons, who
plas guard, was elected captain of the 1020
Red and lriack gridiron team. Coach John
ston was presented with a gold watch and
chain by the squad and In turn each mem.
her of the team received a silver football.
Including Captain Ooldblatt Dessen. Hern
