Former Head of State Fenclbles In
Poor Health Two Yeara
Major Walter Wesley Chew, former
commander of the State ITenciblcs and
a Civil Wur veteran, died this morn
ing shortly after 10 o'clock at his home
iu Mclroso Park. He had been in bad
health for 'riparly two years and was
seventy-seven years old.
Since boyhood the major was am
bitious, to become a soldier. At the
outset of tho Civil War he enlisted
with the 107th Regiment Pennsylvania
Volunteers and served throughout tho
war.
In 1S71 he became a member of the
State Fcnciblea and steadily rose from
the ranks until he became commander
of that organization in 1880.
He Is survived by four children. His
wifo died four years ago..
