smallest fractional limits. Tho low ebb
of market Interest was not difficult to
explain when the restricted calibre of
the New York market was taken into
consideration.
Nothing ot local importance, developed
over Sunday to stimulate independent
movement in the homo issues. The best
the local contingent could do was trail
after the lead of tho bigger board.
There was, however, in nil parts of tho
list good underlying power, or, at least,
sufficient orders In tho market to take
care of nil offerings. Selling pressure
was conspicuously absent and the liqui
dation of the stocks' which had been
overhanging the market In case ot sev
ernl prominent Issues seemed to have
been clenrcil up.
The supply of slocks in tho recent
active issues apparently is still grcnt
Iy restricted. While no effort is made
to stir up fresh enfhusiasm .in these
selected favorites still the smallest buy
ing orders can only bo executed nt ad
vancing prices. This ivus exemplified
strongly ngain in (Jcneral Asphalt com
mon and Klectric Storage IJattcry. Tho
first named on sales of ten shares
mounted $2.50 to 127. The latter made
an early advance of 54 to 142, and whilo
the demand was not continued the prico
was well sustained.
The outstanding feature, however, of
interest was furnished in the continued
buying on the part of small investors of
Pennsylvania Knilroad stock. This buy
ing has been in evidence for bcvcrnl
nttention In local mnrket circles.
Good buying appenred again in Amer
ican Stores which was carried to forty-
two or llfty cents above Saturday's lev-
S2fi!La5-rSf-?RS?. "WC-S1'" 4 Sl-.P wftliln $1.25 of tho top price.
uiviacna prospects aro unquestionably
the motive behind tho quiet obsorptiou
of this issue.
Tho trading In tho balance o the
local shares was of littlo Interest. The
liquidating pressure against United" Gas
Improvement was withdrawn ngain,
with the price well sustained nt C41,i. ,
Philadelphia Electric was still pegged
at par. Philadelphia Rapid on small
transactions advanced to 27. TjnKe
Superior Corporation was entirely
neglected, but was supported at 21'i. .
American Gas on n few odd-lot transoc-"
tions yielded $2 to Cl. On the other
hand. Insurance Company of North
America advanced .? 1 from tho previous
snlo to 30, liittlo more Philadelphia
Traction was offered, but was all taken
nt 112, as was Union Trnctlou nt 38.
The weekly Philadelphia Clearing
House statement bhovved the local insti
tutions not only greatly improved their
reserve position last week, but also suc
ceeded in cutting down tho outstanding
loans and discounts materially.
The new week opened, however, with
out any essentinl change in local money
market conditions, Ilriefly, money is
deuccdly tight," ns an official ot
one of the leading loaning institutions
put It today. Call money is still of
fcretl nt G per cent. There is little of
it, however, to be had. Time money
id quoted anywhere from C per cent up
wnrd. Mont of the banks are putting
out littlo money, and what they are
loaning is on short maturities.

New York, Xov. 24. Pollowlng the
lend . of Liverpool, the cotton market
had n strong opening today at a net rise
of 38 to 70 points. .
Several interests, notably spot houses
and uptown operators, were good buyers
on the first call, while offerings were
light and hcattered, due in part to the
strength of the cables and an absence
of notices owing to tho small stocks
here.
Later, southern selling developed and
prices worked off a few points from' the
highest, showing nbout 25 points net
advance, nt the end of the first twenty
minutes.

How About The Rating?
JOHN SMITH asks his banker to discount
his note for $10,000. The banker does not
know John Smith but agrees to look up
Smith's "rating." If Smith's rating is satis
factory he grants the loan.
ANOTHER John Smith approaches the
banker and asks him to invest $10,000 in a
certain issue of bonds. Smith grows eloquent
over their value and the banker invests in
the bonds on the spot He never thinks to
look up the "rating" on the bonds.
PERHAPS the banker does not know that
bonds and other investments are "rated"
nowadays. But over two thousand banking
institutions in this country do know it and
they never buy bonds nowadays without
first ascertaining John Moody's Tating" on
the bonds.
IF looking up the rating of borrowers is good
banking practice, why is not looking up the
rating on securities good investing practice?
IT is. Write today and let us tell you more
about it
