Philadelphia is a great refining and distributing center for oil.
Under the rivers, through mountains and across level farm land
S the pipe lines run to Philadelphia, while from the South, and East 5
S come great tank ships carrying more oil. S
Thousands of barrels a day are piped from nearby Pennsylvania
S fields and in one case a line 1400 miles long brings oil from the
Oklahoma fields to the Atlantic Refining Company plant in Phila- 5
5 delphia. 40,000 barrels of oil are refined each day at its plant on
H the Schuylkill River, where ocean steamers load for all parts of the
j world.
Large wharfage facilities for handling oil are also provided at the
Crew Levick Company's Petty Island export station, which has an
H area of 344 acres.
Besides these the Sun Company, the Union Petroleum Company
and the Gulf Refining Company have helped to give Philadelphia
supremacy in the production and distribution of oil, here and
abroad. ,
Exports of oil through the Port of Philadelphia amounted in 1918 1
to 385,034,114 gallons, in addition to the vast amount sold locally f
5 and through our territory.
