How typical of Philadelphia's industrial vision that
her businesses should pay more than half the cost of
educating their future workers.
Philadelphia spends annually, for education, more
than twice the amount of the total taxes on her
. 380,000 homes. The difference is paid from the
tax on her business houses.
350 schools and ten great high schools located in
every section of the city, and some 35 or 40 private
schools educate approximately 350,000 students.
Two great universities, eight colleges and seven spe
v cialty schools educate nearly 35,000 students and
occupy first rank in the study of medicine, pharmacy
and dentistry. The School of Industrial Arts is
noted as the finest school of the kind in the country.
Every phase of textile production from practical
weaving to scientific mill management is contained
in its curriculum also complete courses in all
branches of manual training.
Surely the coming generations, offered these educa
tional advantages, and growing up in an atmosphere
of learning, will be more than capable of maintain
ing the industrial lead that Philadelphia has so long
enjoyed.
As for us, we like to muse occasionally over the pos
sibilities for Crew Levick's future. We picture the
sons of some of the devoted employes who have
given years of faithful service. We see them capably
directing the policy and business of the company. It
is a pleasant picture. It portrays the handing down
of high ideals of policy and method, and reputation
for quality. It is easily worth more than our share
of the expense of perpetuating Philadelphia's Indus
trial Supremacy.
