"Every One Treated Squarely, Not as a Favor, But as a Right"
H
Philip Carteret, the First
Governor of New Jersey, in 1664
landed at Elizabethtown and came ashore with a hoe
cth his shoulder, showing his intention to go to work
among the people.
The activities and suggestions of public1 improve
ments while he was Governor by the now Senator
Edge, of New Jersey, recall Governor Carteret's
noticeable spirit.
What a crippling handicap of a strait-jacket
politics stitches upon a Governor or Mayor who
simply pays the price of his election by surrendering
his individuality and duty to a handful of his
electors, according ta contract!
We take great pride and satisfaction in having
organized and built up from the bottom a business
which upon honor and agreement binds us to protect
every one from every species of fraud and the
mistakes common to all human beings and also to see
that every one is treated squarely, not as a favor, but
as a right.
