DEBATERS Annual Fee of Dollar From Each Student Is Urged An annunl fee of $1 per student is the recommendation of members of the debating council of the University of l'eniisjlvania in nn effort to get support for various student activities, particu larly debating. The future of the var sity debating team is problematical, owing to a lack of funds. The debating tenm must pay its own expenses. As a result of this rule few men tried for places on the team. Among other student organizations at l'oiin whicli nre hit hard, financially, is the chess team. Llteiary societies also receive little aid from the school. At Columbia University each student, when he registers, must pay a fee which is used to support campus activities, such ns debating and llternry work. Composition Played Tlie Chnmber Music Association ho- gnn Its third season jesterdnv afternoon neiore a large aiiillcnce nt the iieiievue Stratford. the Letz String Quartet fur nishing the program. The quartet is composed of Hans T.ctr,. first lolln; Sntidor Hnrmntl. second violin; Edward Kreiner, vloln, and Gerald Mans, (ello, and they pla.Mi1 three quartets, Mozart In F major, Beethoven up. ,"0 No. 2 In E minor nnd 11 new quartet In A minor bj Fi itz Krelsier. Mr. Letz. who played second violin lu the Knelsel Quartet when thnt fa mous body wns disbanded, has gatheied around himself as leader n competent body ot Instiumeiitnllsls, who by their plnjing show haul and tonscleiitioiis practice together. Mr. Letz. strongelv enough, has de parted miukcdly from the Knelsel stvle of avowed classicism In quartet plnjing and seems to tend toward a more emo tional Interpretation. He nlso showed n disposition to hurry in florid passages, then make a pause before striking the concluding note, nn effect Hint was not altogether happy in the classic serenity of the Mnnrt Quartet. The tone of the qunrtet is agreeable ntul their ensemble excellent, though not possessing the highest possible degree of finish. Mr. Letz and his associates set them selves n dilficult task in their program, for all three quartets are very difficult, the Mozart in the great fluency of tech nique icquircd, especially in the last movement, and the lieetlnnen in its in volved ensemble. In both compositions they acquitted themselves with credit. The novelty of the program was the quintet bv Fritz Krcisler. The grent violinist is well known ns a composer for his own instrument, but not so much so for his works in the larger forms. The first movement does not ilgldly follow the ciistomnrv sonata structure. It opens with two short (outrasted subjects, which reappear in chnngi'ii form in both the slow move ment singular nnd the scherzo, and re turn In their original form in the coda of the finale. The movement Is rich melncinlly and hnrmonical. The scherzo, which is based on a serenade for Molin nnd piano by Mr. Krelsier, is perhaps the most attractive movement of the four, being full of whimsical fancy, and was well plajcd by Mr. Letz and the others. The slow movement seems to lack depth nnd is the weakest move ment in the w'ork. Mr. Kreisler's Quartet, as a whole, is pleasing, without being especially profound. There is some tendency to ward virtuosity, perhnps onlv nn'tural in a violinist of Kieisler's ability, and it makes considerable technical demands nn the performers without, however, being too difficult technically to justify the nrtistic result. The quartet was completed by Mr. Krcisler in March uf the present jear. Reading Physician Dies Reading, Pa., Nov. 10.
