the opening dip a number of the promi

several isolated instances appreciable
gains over yesterday's prirrs wcrt- re

wns of brief duration, renewed pres
sure causing many of the active leaders
to fall below the level of tho initial

In Electrical Storage linttery the offer
ings were a little morn liberal, bringing

represented to 11 large extent cashing in

Lake Superior Corporation was n
week spot receding lo 22 on what ap
peared to be liquidation by tired hold
ers. The los.s was regained in a spirited
rally in the last hour.
As to the remaining. local stocks price
changes were n question of small frac
tions, t'nitcd Oas Improvement met
sonic fresh selling, but held well be
cause of the support of underlying buy
ing orders. Philadelphia Electric was
unchanged. Philadelphia Kapid Tran
sit and American Stores mnde slight

In the opinion of the officials of the
leading local loaning institutions money
rates are likely to continue firm during
the balance of the current calendar
year. There Is nothing In sight to give
promise of any ensing of the tension,
rather In the contrary, trill Indications
point In growing ilrinncss in money
mnrket conditions.
As one nlllclal put it today, "money
is tight and is likely to be tighter n
the year end approaches." Local cnlj
money is virtually unobtainable under
0 per cent. As n matter of fact, most
of the local institutions are getting n
much higher rate for their call money
in New York. There is nlsp a notice
able hardening of the time money rate.
Relatively few loans bnve been nego-'
tinted less than 5-"!4 per 'cent, and thii
has been on the highest grade of c,ol-j
lateral. It might be said that the finio
money rate is nearer 0 than 5 Per
cent. ' ,
Notwithstanding the growing unrest
of industrial labor, there is still an ac
tive demnnd for funds. Most of the
larger institutions are strictly adhering
to the policy of making loons for short
periods only, in order to keep the loan
able funds as liquid as possible.
There is considerable local interest
in the affairs of the American Ship anil
Commerce Corporation, itecent activ
ity in the stock is understood to reflect,
the neirotintions for the acquisition of
approximately 200.000 tons of addi
tional tnnnnge to enlrage the fleet nl
jcmlv controlled by the company. It
is planned to make the corporation nn
active fncfor in the shipping industry
nf the rnmitrr. Ill addition to it ships,
the corporation imp at itn disposal the
yards of the Cramp Shipbuilding Co.,
taken in with the Kerr Navigation Co.'

COPPER PRODUCTION
Cost Last Year Was Slightly More
Than 16 Cents a Pound
Washington, Oct. 30. Copper pro
duced in 1018 cost slightly more than an
average of sixteen cents a pound, nc
cording to the report of the Federal
Trade Commission to Congress, made
public yesterday.
The report covers eighty-five com
panies in tho United States, Canada,
Mexico, Cuba and South America, pro
ducing apptoximntely 2,250,000,000
pounds of copper, and 05.5 per cent of
the total production of the United
States.
1TI10 amount of investment of the
eighty-five companies in I'.llS was more
thnn 5072,000,000 nnd the prolit real
ised averaged a rate of 28 per cent on
the Investment.
Slightly more than fifteen cents a
pound in the Arizona -New Mciico dis
trict was the lowest average cost and
more thnn li lj cents 11 pound 111 Michi
gan was the highest cost of the states
tabulated In the' report, while copper
produced in South America, Cuba nnd
'Mexico in 1018 cost nn average of
about 1514 cents a pound.
The report represents 114 per cent of

Metal Touches High Record at
$1.23 In New York
New Yorli, Oct. HO. Commercial bar
silver soared to still higher prices here
today, when sales were made n t ?1.23
nn ounce, an advance of q as
compared with yestcrdny's price, again
establishing n new high record for the
metal and 'the highest quotation since
the great silver market boom of the
early '00s.
At this price, bar silver is within a
few cents of the gold parity of silver
dollars. In other words, if the ad
vance continues,- the silver content of
the silver dollars will be worth more
thiinthe face value of the coin. Hiillion
dealers are pointing out that should
this point be reached it would be profit
able to melt down sliver dollars and
sell the silver in them. This has been
done with Mexican silver dollars until
that coin has virtually disapeared from
circulation.
The extraordinary strength of the
white metal is said to be a large de
mand from the Far Kist and the ab
sence of the spot metal from the mar
kets of Europe.
The price of silver in London today
was unchanged from yesterday's quota
tion at OO'jd.
NEW YORK COFFEE MARKET
New Yorit, Oct. SO. Underlying
conditions in the cofTee market show
little or no chnnge and prices, right
nfter the call, were about' at initial
figures.
While occasionally some low Rio and
Victoria firm offerings crop out, the
offerings are promptly absorbed and
holders generally are asking con
siderably higher prices,
Itin shippers have sold considerable
Coffee during the last few weeks ana
it is possible that the supplies which
were pressing on the market some little
time ago have been withdrawn.
The market was empty. The bears
made efforts to depress values from time
lo time, but quick rallies promptly fol
