NO WEAKNESS SEEN
IN MARKET CHANGES
Violent Shakedown of Thursday
Welcomed as a National
Manifestation
SHARES OF THREE KINDS
Stailf sales today nn tlio New Y'nrli
exchange ax compiled by the Evening
Sun, totaled 1.014,000 shares
New York, Oct. :!3. The New York
Evening Sun's financial review today
says:
The labor situation in Ecncrnl and
(lie seeming inevitability of n coal strike
on the verge ot the winter season
brought nbont n considerable selling
movement in today's short session of
the stock market. -.
Tt wns natural enough that there
mould ne 11 strong ilesire to even up
ui-countB as much as possible for the
week-end from the long point of icw
and there was much in the general
situation (to encourage the bears to
ciert selling pressure. Mr. (Jompcrs
calling it conference of labor union
leaders for early neit month, nt which
the stntus of labor will be discussed,
was an tiDscttliu; influence.
Tho country will bo called upon, it
would oppear. to contemplate the spec
tacle of a country-wide sympathetic
strike whether It materializes or not. It
is doubtful if these developments, near
developments and possible developments
would havo been quite so disturbing at
the beginning of the week as they had
at tho closing.
The opening wag irregular and it
was not until toward the closo of the
lirst hour that anything like pro
nounced repression came into play. The
motors made a rather feeble display of
strength from time to time; Goodrich
was a strong spot a good part of the
time and the oils resisted pressure
more or Icbs, but in the tecond hour
the entire list gave way, but not with
out some evidence of the market's abil
ity to absorb.
Thuisdny's violent setback and yes
terday's half-hearted attempt nt reha
bilitation had rendered the Htrect cau
tious in the extreme and temporarily
distrustful of its own convictions.
The entire list was affected by de
cided dampening of spirits and losses
langed from Li to 4 points or so. Trad
ing was fairly animated. The rails
were not exempt from the reactionary
wave, despite the constructive factors
which hate developed this week and
their predilection in the last day or
two for a brighter icw of things.
Technical Position Strong
II was 11 nice question whether or
not the S3initoins displayed by the se
curities market in tho current week
iudlcatcd with nccmacy the future
courbc of prices. Opinion, in truth,
was pretty evenly divided. Those who
favored the constructs e view advanced
the well-nigh threadbare argument
that big holders won't sell, because
they can't reconcile themselves to turn
ing over the bulk of their profits to
the government in the form of tax
levies. If this is true and it is not
easy to refute it the tips and downs
of the market in recent weeks hot less
than in tho week closing today repre
sented respectively extraordinary specu
late enthusiasm and technical cor
rectives. Frequently in the past bull markets
have gone rapidly ahead (o the danger
point, nnd then there has been a crash.
Theio was danger of something of the
kind in the first half of this year, but
the danger was averted nnd the Street
took the lesson to heart. Since June
there has been n bull market of fit-and-start
surface movements, as it
seemed, the result of a determination
not to permit caution to be submerged
in enthusiasm. A day or two or three
days of active buying was followed in
most cases by n setback sufficient to cor
rect the technical position without ap
preciably impairing underlying strength.
No Weakness Seen
Nothing happened this week to call
for a different diagnosis. The forward
swings of Monday, Tuesday and Wed
nesday were followed by a rather vio
lent bhakedown on Thursday in the
heaviest trading of the year, which the
Street regarded ns quite natural and
wbichCit welcomed. Yesterday the list
was nioie orderly and the price tone
steadj. To those who observe market
conditions carefully from day to day
thero was nothing in the performance
10 tuggest weakness. The significant
featura of trading on Thurednv was in
deed the absorptive power.. The mar
Let was momentarily overbought. Those
who bad paper profits were quick to
ree it nnd quick to realize. Tho beurs
were not less prompt in selling their
opportunity.
It is ono thing to sell for profits
with the iden of buying back at the
lower levels and another to bell in order
to get out of a dangerous market. It
is not jet clear that the latter idea has
taken any very firm hold of the specu
latlve mind. ' Perhaps there is too much
reliance on the profit tax theory. How
ever those who doubt it point to the
fact- that the market did not show
weakness when the industiinl cloud was
as black as it is now and when call
loans were tenewing at 8, 0 und 10
per cent and when as high aA ,3C per
cent wnHeuclod for new accommoda
tion. This week call loans renewed at
n per cent and later nt B per cent with
the rate going as low nb 4'j per cent.
It might be observed with some truth
Unit the market insteairof being divided
Into the two categories of industrials
and rails has developed into a triple
oiganbation ot standard aharcs, ape
I'iallico and rails". Tho number of bo
called specialties has beeu very largely
incrcabt-d in recent months by new
listings, and frequently their niov.pment
has been quite distinct from that of tho
others. In other words the market has
often borne the appearance of surging
ahead when the standard issues among
both industrials and rails have held
quito stendy or neglected. ThuH price
movements have in a measure become
susceptiblo to broader interpretation
ind at tho same time cull for more
careful analysis. Any positive tiend
among the specialties affects nioiq or
less the trend of the entile market, al
though violent upturns or setbacks may
lead to fahc conclusions with leaped
to the fetate of the miukct as a whole.
