Nancy Wynne TalJcs of the Coming Horse Show She
Speaks of the Biddle-Ncwlin Engagement.
Other Matters
T1IEHK nre certainly going to be n
(treat mnny dinners in connection
with tho Horso Show, which opens to
morrow out nt Ilryn Mawr. I really
think it will bo even gayer than the
Devon ono last spring, and that cer
tainly was ono peach of n show, with
Its French village and nil the rest of
It! This Is for tho Bryn Mawr Hos
pital, you know, ami I hope it nets n
lot for that worthy institution. It
certainly is n beautiful spot, is It not?
Tho Jack Valentines aro giving a
dinner tomorrow night nnd Mrs. Alex
ander Brown will cntcrfnin on Thurs
day, while tho Charles Munns and Alix
Dolan aro to entertain on Saturday
night at dinners.
I told you I think that the Vnlen
tines have the Frank Bonsnls with them
for tho Bhow. Mrs. Bonsai is Mr.
riunkett Stewart's sister. Incidentally
Doris Stewart Is going to rido in the
show. She is about nino .years old, I
think, and looks nwfully cunning on
her pony.
I suppose most of the debutantes will
go out to the show, nnd I certainly do
like to see them. Eleanor 'Wurts looked
so attractive nt the Thaycrs tea on
Saturday. She was wearing n vcrj
smart light-brown suit and hat that
toned in with her flashing brown eyes.
I like to watch her so much I There's a
certain fresh glrlishness rind abandon
that Is very attractive. Somehow, you
nlways feel there's going to bo pome
thing doing as soon as she appears on
the scene.
THE Popo Ycatmnns tea yesterday
was a pretty nffnir, and it really
was rniite n relief to have only ono to
go to, wasn't it? Jane looked perfectly
sweet in her dainty satin nnd tulle
frock. Caroline Barclay, Elizabeth
Bartow, Florence ftrlflilli, Mnrr I'ngc,
("destine 'Warder, Harriet Zimmer
mann, Hope Wilson, Florence Kane,
Elizabeth Field and Marina and Trances
Wister were in the receiving party.
And Mrs. Yeatman had asked Mr-". A.
.T. Dallas Dixon, Mrs. Howard Wurts
Fage, Mrs. Austin Furves and Miss
Elizabeth Andrews Harris to preside
at the tea table.
SEEING the Wister girls reminds pie
that they will make their debut on
October 13, out nt the old Wister house
in Logan. It is called Butler Place,
jou know, nnd hns been in the AVistcr
family for generations. Both Mariun
nnd Fanny nre Wisters from start to
finish, as it were. Their mother, who
tiled Fcvcral years ago nnd who was
one of the most greatly loved women in
this city, was Miss Mary "Wister. the
daughter of Mrs. William Botch Wis
ter, nnd Mr. Owen Wister was her
cousin as well as her husband.
Mrs. Wister was one of the founders
of the Civic Club and was, if my mem
ory serves me right, its first president.
Indeed, the club members attribute
much of their success in their under
takings to the memory of her undying
spirit nnd strong purpose in the great
work she undertook and carried on.
Miss Frances A. Wister, their
mother's sister, will chaperon Marina
and Frances at most of the parties.
Of course, their father's talent as a
writer is undisputed. Most of us hnve
read and cnjojeil his hooks beyond
words. ,
Unlike the children of most geniuses,
the Wister girls nre very talented and
very attractive. Marina is very mu
sical nnd has a decided literary streak.
The story goes that at the ngo of ten
she wrote an opera and taught her
younger brothers and sisters their vari
ous parts. But these girls arc not the
clever kind that make people stand off.
On the contrary, they nre simple, nat
ural, sweet girls, good talkers, full of
life and humor, and nre very good look
ing. Frances is named for her auccs
tress, the actress Fanny Kcmble.
' Wouldn't you love to hear that
opera? Perhaps it's as funny as the
book Marie Louise Wanamaker Munn
wrote when she was eight and sent to
her father as n birthday gift. That was
even illustrated by the young authoress.
Another engagement in tho Xcwlin
family! Did you ecr know any thing
to beat it? ast year Caverley, and
he's married now; a month ago Louisa
and Beau Whitney; and now Adelaide
and Livingston Biddlc. Adelaide is only
just coming out this year and, in fact,
Major and Mrs. Xewlin aro giving a
party for her and Louisa and the J.
Caverly Xewlin, .Trs., this evening
at tho Merion Cricket Club.
Adelaide is named after her mother,
who was Miss Adelaide Sims, a sister
of Admiral Sims, and Adelaide's middle
name is Sims. too. Sho is a very good-
uiJookng, attractive girl with dark hair
and eyes nnd n very charming man
ner. Liv Blddle, as you know, is the
younger son of tho Tony Biddies, a
brother of Tony, Jr.,- who married
Mary Duke, and of Cordelia, who mar
ried Angler Duke.
THEY wcra just married last week
nnd they started off on their honey
moon with much determination not to
let any one think that they had not
been married for years. You know how
you all do. So when their car reached
tt country road, before thjy took their
train, they caJed a hnlt nnd both got
out; and, taking a clothes brush which
tho brldo had put Into her bag, pro
ceeded to brush all tho confetti and
rlco oft of each other's clothes.
When 'they reached their hotel they
took even further precautions nnd shook
their coats and wraps thoroughly. Fin
ally, wJicn they descended to the din
ing room for dinner, they even had that
world-weary air of being almost bored
that no one was coming in to dine
with them that evening. They really
did it well.
Everything went beautifully till the
coffee was served; then young husband
drew from his pocket his cigarette case;
he could smoke at last ; and as he
opened it wide, out ilew grain upon
grain of rice. Needless to say, it was
all up. " XANOY WYNNE.
