. Chicago, Oct. I). Signs, of freer of
ferings from the country and particu
larly for improved weather led to felling
of corn and forced the market down to
day after it had made good gains in
the earlv trading
Tho initial movement upward was
duo to a rush of chorts to cover and
scattered buving by commission houses
induced by more optimistic reports of
the state of President Wilson's health;
stiffer rates for foreign exchange ; the
settlement of the sritke on the English
railways and bad condition in the belt.
Trading fell off muterially after the
first spurt of business The opinion pre
vailed that bearish advices from Argen
tina would have a psycological effect on
farmers in the United States in the
matter of disposing of their hogs.
Longs and northwestern interests
sold oats, sending the market off. Trade
was small.
It was reported that offerings from
the country were small and the de
mand for cash article from the East'
was slow. Exporters declared that
mere was little, it any, improvement
in the inquiry for foreign shipments

New- York, Oct. 11. The New Tork
Evening Sun's closing financial review
today snys :
News developments over the week
end were fntornble, nnd the course of
the stock market iu every sense met to
day expectations entertained at the
elofo nf st week by moving ahead
lirnnrllv nml l,riblv Tl. f,,.,. .....i
swing embraced railroad shares as well
as industrials. i
The steel and equipment issues were
wMl in the lead from the outset, and
they were closely seconded by the
motors, oils, sugars, shippings and in
numerable individual specialties.
Gains ranged from 1 to H points or so j
among the standard stocks, while some
of the so-called miscellaneous stocks
advanced o to 10 points. At midday the !
movement slowed down to some extent,
and in many cases prices dropped back
from the top figures, but the position
within the market was not impaired
appreciably.
The improvement iu the President's
condition was the most telling factor.
His illness had been denressluc and the
street depiecated the rather alarmist
character of the statement from the
White Hou-.c last week. It. is not I
natural, therefnre, that tho reaction j
from anxiety should be much in evi- j
deuce. Iu support of this there were
tne turtner factors of the settlement
in the Hiitish railway strike, the con
vening of the industrial conference in
Washington from which. lookinc nt it
j from the economic viewpoint, much is
expected, whilo at tho same time It is
iceognized that its deliberations may
be complicated by tho precipitation of
the steel walkout in advance of the
gathering.
It hns become pretty clear, how
ever, that tho strike has nearly worn
itself out und possibly this may render
the radical labor leaders more pliable.
The rioting at Gary was interpreted in
some quarters as indicating tho last,
phase of the strike on the theory that
when violence begins it is a sign that
the strikers arc losing confidence in the
strength of their position.
The reconvening of the Supreme Court
which has many cases at the head of the
calendar dealing with big business was
regarded w ith iutercst. The advice of
the, council of national defence to save
aud produce as the only effective means
of keeping commodity prices down, and
the federal reserve bulletin, urging in
creased production, contained nothing
new so far as the street was concerned
but such remainders from quartrrs sn
influential are always timely.
Tho most spectacular performers
among the industrial shares were Cruci
ble Steel. General Motors. Mexican
Petroleum aud Baldwin Locomotive
Steel touched 10S farly. Atlantic Gulf,
Southern Pacific and Texas and Pacific
were strong by virtue of their petroleum
possibilities. The coppers did well, and
American Can, the tobaccos, Interna
tional Paper, the tire shares, Baltimore
& Ohio, Reading, Atchison and others
enjoying expansive moments.
Stocks were none too freely offered in
either list, and tho shorts were more
or less kept on the rack all the time.
MONEY-LENDING RATES
NEW YOIlIi Money on call, both
mixed collateral and all industrial col
lateral, opened today at 7 per cent for
lending nnd renewing.
The market for time money shows
unchanged conditions. Business is light
with money offered on industrials at
(5 per cent up to ninety days. There
have been some loans on that basis for
sixty days.
Prime mercantile paper is slightly
more active at unchanged rates of 5
o2 per cent.
The ruling rate for call money con
tinues to slow down. Rates aro un
changed. Call loans on acceptances
stand at 4'i per cent.
