TRADING IN THE LOCALS
CAME TO A STANDSTILL
Conspicuous Absence of Liquidation Despite Critical Stage o
Steel Labor Situation Price Changes Slight
--M
rrndinc in the local stocki came next
to n complete standstill. In fact, there
was not suffieient business done during
the first hour to permit nn Intelligent
opinion of either the trend or charac
teristics of the market.
Like all other security exchanges the
market was under the ban of the criti
cal turn In the steel labor sltuntlon.
The decision, however, of the steel labor
unions to InauKiirnte a strike next
Jlonday rather than influencing wide
spread spiling, had the effect to put a
damper on all speculative activity.
There was only n dribbling of selling
orders when the market opening and
the execution of these influenced n
slight fractional shading ot prices.
One or two of the local stocks btartcd
with small gains.
While none of the local stocks "'will
be directly affected by a strike, still
the Incident from a sentimental view
point can be expected to exert consid
erable market Influence.
The consensus of opinion In market:
circles this morning was that the radi
cal action of the union leaders had evi
dently been discounted. There Is nn
old adage, however, on the street,
"Never sell stocks on strike news."
This possibly may have kept the re
actionist' In check. The outsnnrllng de
vclopment, howevef, was the conspicu
ous absence of liquidation.
The narrowness of the market may
be appreciated from the fact that tho
total turnover for the first thirty min
utes of the trading hardly aggregated
500 shares. Ou very small offerings
