state title. The present champion,
William 0. Fownea, .Tr., ii going to

from n case of ptomaine polonmg.
Fownes has won the stnw champion
ship four times, and ho is one of tue
two, Pittsburgh players who has won
the national championship.
It has onlv been won three times bv
n Philadelphiaii, and on two of those!
occasions the winner Happened io oo n
student at tho University of Pennsyl
vania. But here is nn opportunity for
a Philadelphia born golfer to turn the
trick. There are six Pittsburgh players
who will play today, and some of them
are bound to figure in the match play.'
But with Champion Hcrron out oi me
tourtiament and Fownes not in the best
of health, tho Philadelphians have an
excellent chance of winning the state
crown.
x Best Plajers Entered
With iiw exception of George W.
Hoffncrnnd Cameron B. Buxton, all
the best players in town are entered for
play. Four ot them qualihcU in tne na
tional chnmnionshin Mar Mnrston, .T.
Wood Piatt. Edward O. Clarcy and
Paul Tcwksbury.
Everv one is familiar with their
nlnv in the national event. Othirs who
ought to figure are Norman II. Max
well, Francis Kemble, Phil Corson and
Timmlo Ga, not to mention J. J.
Beadle.
Maxwell won the Philadelphia Cricket
Club tournament, eliminating Iloffner
' In the final round. lie is a former
North nnd South champion nnd one of
the best medal and match players in tliw
section. Kemble is the winner ot the
recent invitation tournnment of the
Merlon Cricket Club, while Gjay is one
of the best of the local amateurs.
Tho amateurs handed the pros a
bump by winning thteo of the four
prizes yesterday. Years ago an amateur
would not hnvc stood a ghost of a show
in an open championship, Dut times are
changing and the amateurs are making
inroads on the pros in these events
which hnvc 'been hitherto the sacred
property of the professionals.
Investigate Beudb's Age
Shortly after J, J. Beadle won the
I.u I.u tournament there appeared nn
Interview with one of his family in
which it was stated that within n year
of having quit as a caddie he won 'a local
tournament. Beadle has been asked
i by the representatives of the State As
sociation to bring them a signed state
ment from his mother concerning his
age and another statement of his own
as to when lie stopped caddleing.
No one can caddie for pay after he
is sixteen without affecting his amateur
status, and if the statement made by
hls relative Is true it would make Beadle
caddieing after the age of sixteen. Bea
dle told the committee that there Is a
mistake, as the last time that he cod
dled was on Memoiial Cay in 1010
and at that time he was iifteen, his
sixteenth birthday not coming until
August.

She is only seventeen years old, but,

Miss Dallctt copped the first set from
Mrs. Harvey at G-.t, then ran up to a
