local market. Further moderate recovery was made on tho curb. There
was improvement in the market for foreign exchange. Corn and oats
were weak. Bar silver was higher in New York nnd London.

good.
Trading through the short session was
light in olume, but thete was excellent
bining in the motor group nnd in the

gains ranged from 1 to 4 nnd 5 points.
The Stnndnrd list was rather neglected,
especially the rails, which virtually had
no market nt all. Crucible Steel and
Baldwin Locomotive were the strong
spots nmong the steels nnd Utah among
the coppers.
Marine common nnd preferred were
in demnnd on the strength of wholly un
confirmed reports tlint the bacK divi
dends on the latter were about to be
paid, probably in scrip, as the story
went, in order to avoid government tax
ation, which would be levied if paid in
cash.
However, there was a good deal of
the hnlldaj atmosphere about the street,
which was reflected unmistakably in
the market. Needless to sn, there were
many vacation, as well as week-end,
absentees, nnd the commission houses
were nil but deserted. News develop
ments plated little pnrt in price move
ments, which were governed entirely
by considerations bn-ed on the techni
cal position, mainly covering by shorts.

New York, Aug. 23. The curb mar
ket made a further moderate recovery
of the losses which had been sustained
during the early part of the week but
trading was confined to nn unusually
smnll number of issues and nearly nil
the business on the bujing side came
from interests identified with the vari
ous properties, few orders being re
ceived from tho outside public.
Amerienn Ship and Commerce was
fnirl aetite, but the bujing was of
this character also in that stock, which
sold at 35 4 to M.
Colonial Tire, which dropped jestcr
ilnj to 'J.'i. was traded In at 2.1 to 30
nnd support was in evidence in the Sn
vold issues. Savold Tire sold at 40

featured by a sharp advnnce in sterling
which influenced the rest of the market.
At tho outside sterling cables, which

to 4.131,, wns quoted at 4.22. From
this rate there was a reaction to 4.20.
Demand ruled at 4.10 VI.
