I'fs,, " EVENING PUBLIC LEDGER PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, AUGUST 14, 1919 n I ( 5s Gimbel Brothers Store Hours : 9 to 5 Closed Summer Saturdays For Tomorrow Friday Gimbel Brothers Thursday, August 14, 1919. Gimbel Brothers m FIRE LOSS FACED i Unless Insurance Keeps Pace With Growing Values Penal ties May Be Heavy Mr. Property Owner, hnve you In- Icreased your fire insurance so tlint It has kept pace with the grent rise iu (the cost of building materials and in- (creasca property values; j If you have not jou stand to lose jhcavlly in case o( dnmnRc to your prop Jertjr by fire, and if your property is Completely destroyed. i A warning to this effect li sounded bv jThomas i. Wilson, manager of nn in- urance company here. According to Mr. Wilson, less thau 1 BO per cent of property on ners through- Lout tho country have kept up their fire Hinsuranco in proportion with the in- I creased property values and building I materials. "We will take for instance," Mr. i Wilson said, "the property owner who built a house five years ago at the cost Jlof $10,000. That property today will ibe worth in the neighborhood of J $20,000. At the time this house was I built the owner insured "it for SO per cent of its value, or ?S000." Face Heavy Ixss All fire insurance companies carry a clause known as the coinsurance clause, which means, in brief: If at the time of fire the insurance carried is less thnn SO per cent of the value, the insured will be paid such proportion of his loss as the amount of the Insurance bears to SO per cent of the present value. For example, a house formerly valued I at $10,000 is insured for SO per cent lot its value, or $SO0O. The home has doubled in value and is now worth $20,- 1000. It Is damaged by fire, but not wholly destroyed. The insured is paid Buch proportion of his loss as the amourt of the insurance ($S00O) bears to SO per cent of the $20,000, which is $10,000. Tho insurance paid would thus be one-half of $SO0O, or $4000. Therefore he is made coinsurer with the insurance company and stands to lose one-half of the amount caused by the fire damage. If the house, now worth $20,000, is destroyed, the insured receives the full amount of his policy, or $8000. Warns Property Owners In defense of the insurance brokers, Mr. WiUon said that tho business man who owns property and the home o ner should not take a visit from them in the Hht that they are making the call on you to increase your insurance in proportion to tho increased value of your property for the sole purpose of personal gain on their part, but that their talk should be given an audience and the .matter thoroughly considered. "The insurance companies," Mr. "Wilson said, "neither gain or lose any thing by tho property owner s neglect, and it is surely to his benefit to keep his insurance in pace with the increase in property values." SUICIDE THEC-mjDISPELLED Woman Also Finds Farewell Note a Wedding Invitation Instead of attempting suicide, as was reported by his wife when lie was sent to Mount Sinai Hospital yestcrdav. Abraham Miklebank fell against the gas range in his home, the hospital authori ties learned when it was found he had a fractured skull. Simultaneously Mrs. Miklebank dis covered that what she had taken to be a suicide note when she found the inert body of her husbanj was only a wedding invitation. Mr. Miklebank has been n sufferer from severe stomach trouble, lesterday morning he went to the kitchen to heat some water for the relief of his ailment. A few minutes later his wife Kindled gas. She went to the kitchen to find tier husband ljing unconscious ncross an onen jet on the stove Beside him was an envelope, and knowing the extent or his sintering, she said, she imme diately jumped at the conclusion that he had sought to end his life. The police believe the man had just turned the gas preparatory to lighting it when he collnnscd on the ctnrn. striking his head. I'! ...
