FACE TRIAL IN BALTIMORE
Clarence Cothron and Grace Clark
alias Orace Cotbron, who were tnken
back to Ilaltlmoro from Palatka. Fin.,
on the charge of shooting to death

Laurel, Md., on June 4 last, and vvlir

led the detectives to the spot where
they arc said to have killed John T.
Wcldon, a negro chauffeur, of 181
Montrose street, this city, on July 7
last.
"Where Is the place you had the
fight with "Weldon?" asked headquar
ters detectives as they drew up in the
machine with the prisoners on the Lin
coln Highway, about thretmiles from
Elkton.
"Tlipre It 1st That is where we
had the fight. We had a fight about
my wife. I first struck him, and he

toward some hucklebeny bushes and
fell. I didn't go after him, but niv

ours. Gene by name, drove away in
Weldon's car," is the statement the
detectives say Cothron mnde.
Evidence of Shots
The confession of Cothron led the de
tectives to search still more, and a few
minutes Inter thev came across the
remains of the Philadelphia chauffeur,
who had met his death at the hands of
the gang. There was distinct evidence
tbnt several shots had been fired.
Three weeks ago Cothron and n
woman whom he introduced as his wife

rose street, and told the negro they
contemplated taking an automobile tour
through the South and wanted to hire
him and his machine for a month or so.
Wcldon was willing, and that day drove
the couple away.
Two weeks passed, and as the wife
of' Wcldon had heard no word from her
husband she reported his absence to the
police. While the police were searching
for him word came fiom Baltimore that
a negro named Homer Jones bad been
murdered by a white man and a woman.
The circular stated that the white man
hired Jones to drive them on a motoi
trip through the Southlands. On the
circular was n picture of a woman
whom friends of Weldon said they rec
ognized as the woman who left in the
machine fiom Philadelphia with Weldon
and the white man.
Also Kidnapping Charge
Seveial dajs later word came from
Palatka, Fla., that a man and woman
had been arrested in that town, and in
their possession was an automobile be
longing to Wcldon. Detective Joseph
Shay was immediately sent to the Flor
ida town nnd the machine was found to
lie that of Weldon's. Cothron and his
wife were brought back to Elkton jes
terday by Detective Shay.
Not only must Cothron stand trial on
a double murder charge, but he is also
charged with kidnapping nine- ear-old
Mamie Grosscup, of Baltimore, and tak
ing her to Palatka, ria.

Bishop Rhlnelander's Appointment
May End Factional Trouble
Bishop Rhinelander has appointed the
Itev. Frederick A. Garrett to act as
missionary in charge of St, Thomas's
Protestant Episcopal Church, Twelfth
street below Walnut. This action ends
a factional struggle of several years'
duration and financial loss.
St. Thomas's is the oldest Episcopal
congregation for negroes in tho United
States, it is said. With the naming
of an incumbent It is believed the parish
can be restored to its former prosperity
and tho stipend of its pastor paid from
parish funds. Proposition to obtain a
more convenient site has been made.
The pulpit has been vacant since the
resignation last autumn of the P.cv.
William B. Slendricks, now recovering
from a stroke of paralysis.
