Brokerage Houses Advise Mod

Money Situation
Stock sales tod.ij on the New York

Sun, totaled 1.2.18,700 sh.ires.
New Yoik, .Tnlj .'SO The New York
livening Sim's I111a11ei.il review this
afternoon is as follows:
The coin se of pi ices in todnj's stool;
market indicated that counter forces
were at work which, at times tlnougli
the (session, seemed very neailv to
halanee each other. Tiadeis vveie bear
ish and most of the more influential
brokerage houses continued to advise
moderation not onlv because prices
have reached a level at which few issues
may be regarded as ical bargains with
n possible summer lull to face, but also
because there lias been, mid still is, a
decided feeling of uneasiness with ic
spect to monej .
Added to these considerations there
was conviction of a soit that made for
an instinctive sense of impending change
in the chainctei of the linrket Whether
instilled b events or not this situation
is explanatory of the tiimditv, pru
dence, or whntever one mav choose to
call it, of the rank and tile of the
stiect Most oveijbnclv is waiting fm
something and a good part of that
something would seem to be ccineeined
with what will be done about the
money supply and the legulution of
foreign exchange.
The unexpectedlj favorable showing
in the I'nited States Steel cpiaiterlj re
port proved to be a very mild bullish
factor not through lack of satisfaction
at whnt it promises for the third ciunr-
ter of the jear, hut because under the
circumstances it could not operate as a
factor of the first importance. Money is
flowing out of New Yoik to the West
for crop moving pin poses. Through tie-
teiioration in the ciops themselves the
financial demands of this chaiacter
probably will fall shoit of earlier bank
ing estimates. Anv relief to be felt in
of two and one-half per cent on the capital 1 c onseciuence will probablj be more than
neutralised bj growing realization ot
what Kurope mnj demand in the wnj of

The Federal Iteseive I?oard again met
at Washington and the repented state
ment that it would take up the matter
of brokeiage loans which was again
denied, it is needless to sa, gave the
bears their opportunity in the middle
of the forenoon to depress prices 1 to ,".
points or so. The early ti.iding was
on a rising scale and mere was pretiv
good recover mound noon and the fii'ht
part of the afternoon.
Business was in larger volume than
either Monday or Tuesdaj. As was
the case esterday, the copper and rail
road stocks were steadier than the rest
of the list. The tobaccos were strong,
particularly I'nited Hctail Stores. Hide
nnd Leather common wn 11 bought.
The motors and i-pecialties were 1: der
more insistent pressure than the otheis.
The tobacco group held the center of
the stage as the session progressed, and
in the last hour there was pronounced
strength in that cinnrter. The steels
were barely able to hold their modesi
rally. Aside from a few individual
shares, like Hide nnd Leather common,
American Writing Paper preferred and
a few others, the list refused to follow
the lead of the tobaccos, and the clos-
inir was irregular. ar bonds were
firm and actively bought.
Money rates steadied, ruling nt 0 and
fl'A per cent, with business rather light
In both call nnd time funds. The out
ward flow of gold from this center and
San Francisco continued in moderate
amounts. Weakness in francs was the
feature of foreign exchange, Paris bills
touching a new low point at 7.32 for
checks 8 centimes down. Sterling
reacted 2 points to $4.3.", and Belgian
francs lost 10 points. Lire eased off t
points also, while the Scandinavian
rates firmed materially.
The Iron Age states that increasing
operation of blast furnaces and Rteel
plants in the Pittsburgh district lias
an emphasized tendency and that un

of the jear often marked by slacken

LITTLE OF INTEREST OCCURS
ON THE LOCAL EXCHANGE
Sliares of the American Ship and Commerce Corporation Make
Initial Appearance Steel Sells Off
Business on the Philadelphia Stock Exchange nt today's session developed
little of interest. Trndera were slow about getting started, waiting, apparently,
to ascertain what effect the report of the United States Steel Corporation, issued
late yesterday, would have on market opinion.
While the opening of the exchange wns steady, there were no sales of
United States Steel, nor of Lake Superior in the early dealings, nnd when
these stocks finally came out both showed declines. In the case of the former,
this loss was more thnn n point, while Lake Superior, in which there wns
quite heavy trading, Blld off .
Shnres of the Americnn Ship nnd Commerce Corporation nppeared on
the exchange for the first time today, attracting a fair amount ofvtittention,
the price ranging from nbovc 42. Cramps was another fnvorltc in the day's
transactions, the quotation holding nt about recent levels.
Buffalo and Susquehanna preferred made a nice advance nt fiS, up 2 from
Inst previous sale nnd Westmoreland Coal, on n small sale, was marked up .
Keystone Telephone dropped more than Vj on a turnover of something like "a
hundred shares.
Hales in the bond section of the exchange were limited. A block of $3000
Electric and People's Traction was down nt 00. Heading gcncrnl 4s
Lehigh Valley Gs, 102.1, and Lehigh Vnlley Conl us held about steady.
