New York, July 20. The less nctive phase of the speculation noted yes
terday on the stock exchange was, of course, accentuated today when tho
operations might be said to have taken on a holiday Tolume. There wns no
indication of weakness in the market, however, and the action ol United
States Steel was disconcerting to the alleged very large short Interest in
that stock while it gave tone to the general list. It rose nearly a point to
within a fraction of the recent high.
The copper shares showed quiet accumulation, and the oils and to
baccos, as well as the steel industries and food stocks, were In demand.
Advances in the tire stocks extended to a point or more.
Corn Products opened a shnde lower, but rallied partially and was
comparatively active within a fraction of yesterday's final figure. After
ndvnnces of 1 to 2 points or more there were Irregular recessions on profit
taking. Central Foundry rose from 'M'A at the close yesterday to 41. Cru
cible Steel jumped from 140 to 143 and thereafter ranged up and down
within a point.
Kcj stone Tire and Kelly-Springfield Tire gained more than 1 point
and there were advances of 1 to 2 points In Texas Company, Sinclair,
(ieneral Cigars, Itetail Stores, New Haven, Iloyal Dutch of New York, To
bacco Products, Itcadlng, American Sumatra and the maiincs.
Government bonds were quiet. Rnllvvaj and other bonds ruled steady
all morning.

strength at times. The whole industrial

Thp announcement that the Standard
Oil Company of New Jersey was about
to raise $100,000,000 new capital
through the sale of preferred stock
aroused much Interest in stock market
circles. This is n new departure for
the Stnndard Oil and the long list of
big finunclng operations which are nl
most daily occurring in Wall street is
a splendid commentnry on the invest
ment situation and banking confidence
in the country's power to laise un
limited amounts of capital.
At the opening today 115 was bid for
the new 7 per cent preferred stock to
be issued, while the subscription rights
on the curb ranged from lei to 17.
