A " pound" In Height, joins tlto Athletics today. This .xoung peron. who was
discovered in tlio wilds of arid Columbia, S. C, by Connie Mack, comes here
with a his reputation manufactured in advance, and is supposed to take (ieorgc
lltirns's place at lirt base. The nthlete who does this will have to go some,
but Maurice is expected to do that very thing,
Connie Mack says Iltirrus Is a wonderful player and one of the most
1 krl.x looking youngsters he ever has seen, lie made a trip to Columbia and
was impressed the instant he laid his eyes upon him. It required but a look
and the wuns-tcr's fate vtas scaled. lie ju-t HAD to become a member of
the A s and Connie refused to lonxe until the ileal was completed,
Now comes one of the ".trnngo angles of the game nf ba-eball. Few know
, that I'mrii-, instead of being with the Athletiis and boosted to the skies he
fore he sinks a spike in Sliilie l'ark, almost became a member of the 1'lills,
and the oiih thing which ptoxonted it was a rainstorm. This sounds strange,
but noxerthelesi it is true.
lien the rhils were tring to train down in Charlotte this spring a prac
tice game was arranged with A, and M College, of ltnloigh. Coomb was
anxious to plnj a real ball game with anjhody and the college Imjs were eagerly
awaited. Some of the nntixos told Coombs of a wonderful pitcher named
Burrus and asked him to iw him up during the game.
"This lad Ilurrus is a bear." said the Charlotte booster, "lie is the
beat college twirler in the South, and mj, how he can hit that ball '. Look him
Iver and I'll bet jou will sign him."
Jack promised to do this, but was cot impressed. Iioosts of that chnr-
ncter are handed out twenty times a day in a training camp and they are old
stuff. Coombs, however, who never lets anything slip by, told all of his players
to look oxer the kid curxer and if lie was nn.x good he would gixe him u chance.
And that was as close as the I'hils came to getting this phenom.
It rained the net cljx . the game was called off and the A. and M. bojs
departed for another town to plu.x n scheduled game.

Burns Playing: Bettor Ball
GEORtir UI'HNS is plajing better baseball these dajs and nppcnrs to he
emerging ficpm the hatting and lidding Mump of the last 'month. I'.ase
lilts are fixing off his b.U more frequently. lie was the sensation of the league
last j ear, when he compiled a swatting axenigc of ..".."iU, wliich was 1"0 points
cttcr than his lfUT mark.
George is a peculiar hitter. Never does he perform brilliantly two years
in a iox, but has a bad jcar after eery good one. lie started xxith Detroit
in 1014 and hit for .li'Jl. That xxas xery good in those dajs and much was
etpec'ed "f him the ne-ct jenr. In 1015, however, he dropped to .'Jo.'l and
came back with .'Jii the folloxxing o:ioin. The big slump came in 1017 and
Ilughex Jennings, after looking at his final average of .'J2tl, decided to turn
him loose In this manner he became a member of the A's and hit for .352
his first year.
lie has been going bad this year, but he is a great hitter just the same,
tturns stands out as a slugger, has made a reputation and xou can't take it
'axrax fioin him. The other da.x Cicorge pi'id a great compliment to Tj Cobb
and said he owed eer.x bit of what little success he had to the (leorgiau.
"When I tii-st broke into the league." said liurns, "o xere training in
Gulfporr Miss. I a just an ambitious kid and noiked my head off every
day. I was a fair hitter, but mj form xxas terrible, fine day Cobb told me
m) position at the plate was wrong and suggested that I change it. After that
lie paid close attention to my xxork, told me how to sxving and other little details
xhk-h go xxith successful hitting. Then I xxatched him closely while he was
at bat and 1 b"gan to improxe.
' Ty Cobb is one of the greatest men in baseball and alnays is xvillin- to
lend a helping hand. Some say he is a crab and has a swelled head, but don't
you beliexe it. T.x is one o the grandest fellows on earth."

Babe Ruth Hitting Consistently
rpYIUS TIIH (IHI'AT maintains his lead among the American League
-1- hitters with an axerage of ..'!."s. He also has soaked the largest number
of hits and still is going strong. It will he hard to dethrone the King of Swat.
An interesting featuie in the wccklj axerages is the work of Iiahe Until
in the last wrek. Tar.an is hitting consistently at last anil has busted in(0
the .r00 class xxith a mark of "l'J. This is a gain of thirtj-fixe points in a
eek .
This season Iiabe decided to become a home-run hitter. Kxery time he
stepped up to the plate he tried to knock the ball out of the city, and as a
result was an easy mark for the pitchers, xxho used change of pace. He
used to leach out for xxide curxes or hit the ball near his knuckles and went
hitlcss game after game Nuxv he is willing to hit a few singles and his nxera-e
has piolited gnatl.x thiriby. It xxill be remembered that Cobb seldom makej
a home run 'Most of his hits are one-basers.
As usual, the A's make a sorry showing in the column, there being only
two "00 hittirs -Keith and Witt. The others ure lust in the sbiiflie near the
bottom Tilly Walker, however, has 1h.osi.m1 hK mark twenty-four points
and Joe Dugan has an increase of tvxeutx two. Howexer, xvith Hums hit
ting 'S.'2, l'eikins ".'Oil, Thomas . 1IJI and MrAxoj .Hi!, we can't expect to
win man) ball games.
'Till: pitchris are not setting thr icoild on fire, but establishing
j. rirords just the same. Tom Hogrrs hat the brit losing streak in
the league uith eight stiaighl. It icill be haul to beat that mark.
Gavvy Real Hero of National
rplIK real lieio in the National League is (itivvv Craxath. with his batting
- average of nboxe 400. This is a wonderful piece of work, especially when
one realizes he is pla.xiug on u losing team where the pln.xers are discouraged
and don't cue u hang if school keeps or not. The old boy K there with the
Koods, is plaxing a great game every daj . steps up to the plate and whangs
'cm out as if he weie on a championship dub and never quits. That's (inxvy
all oxer he is no quitter.
He is doing more for the ball dub than any other man, is the principal
Kate attraction unci one of the most popular plajers iu the league. At the ago
of thiitj seven he is outstripping all of the .xouugsters and shows no signs of
cracking If he can hit nboxe .400 when the club is losing, what will he do
v when it starts x inning V
The I 'Ill's still are a in.xstery. Thej are the third best hitting club in the
Icajrue, second in the greatest number of hits and third in the runs scored. Vft
they are losing cousistentlj and many are wondering what is the matter.
Itill I'lielon, the Cincinnati expert, takes his pen in hnnd and dashes off
the folloxxing:
"Slowly but surely Jack Coombs's unfortunate team seems to be dropping
into the cellar. There's a lot of unexen work a lot of sliickno.ss. The make-
J, ulilft lulleld doesn't combine right and the runners are liaxing fun xvith the
i Hi outfield. Williams never coulclSthroxv for sour upplcs and Meusel's arm is so
rlame he can hardly get the ball up to the infield. Much dixersion results and
much damage to the I'hils' percentage.
j "Thv pitchers, too, are going wild and the batsmen take full adx-autage
" of their foibles. It's a bad-looking ball club."
fUUKVH the dope from a disintcicstcd outsider. Hut after losing
thirteen in a roio ice can cxp,ect anything, and all ice can hope for
it a big improvement tchen the club gels home on Monday,

SONGS OF THE GAME
A'o. 2 "You re Pitching to the Wrong Home Plate
Young Mickey .ones, a big league star, iccm calling on some dame;
Younq Mickey had a lot nf speed, no matter irhat the game;
So after tcinding vp a bit to let his stuff gel by,
lie hooked a fast one round her neck the other leas iraisl high;
Whereat the lady having duckal finite safely out nf icay,
Turned her .300 eyes on him and bitterly did say
Chorus "Take aicay that hop from off your fast one, lid,
Settle down a trifle in your lolc;
Vau'd a little too much stuff upon that last one, kid,
Shoic me a little more control;
What with the landlord and the grocer in the game,
I have ilriidrd to irnil ;
Oh, you've got all the speed that a winner ought to need,
5 Bu( liou'rc pitching to the wrong home plate."
So Mickey .Jones got up and left before her burning scoff;
Said he, "I'll show this woman up or pitch an elbow off" :
lie icon his ncrt eleven games iirf erperts all agreed
That he had Alexander stopped and Waller Johnson treed;
And when thr lady saw hir name in headlines every day.
She iicpt to think she unto him these bitter words did say
Ctnn.t
"Take away that hop from off your fast one, kid," etc.
The Shortstop Harvest
THE old days had their great shortstops three of the greatest In Long,
Wagner and Jennings. . j
But it is a matter of excessive doubt if any period in baseball history ever ,
knew as many fdiortstnp stars as the present epoch knoxvs. The year 1019
might xvell be called the Uoltleu Age of Shortstops.
,
rjOLLOCHIlR, I'cckcnpaugh. Maranville. Fletcher. Scott. Bancroft,
Rush, La van. Chapman, Dugan virtually all through the list.
.A'o other one position carries as gieat a piopoi tton of stars.
Holding the Edge
IT IS no great feat to dovelop-the keen edge of form if one goes nbout the job.
But maintaining this keen edge is another affair.
Jack Dempsey xxas reported to be mound top form over ten days ago. He
xxas teported ready oxer three xveeks before the kick-off came. This means
the keenest sort of training judgment xxill be required to have him on edge
around July 4. A youngster of txxenty-four doesn't need half the training
period a middle-aged nthlete around forty requires. Willard had a cluster of
fat to xxork off and a number of kinks to iiou out. Yet Dempsey was on the
job at Toledo before Willard xvas.
Dempsey needs all the weight he can carry to face a man of Willard's dis
placement. He already had the keenness and the pep. tine of the easiest
tilings an entry can do is to reach top form too oon and find himself skidding
by the day of the main test.
For here is a mental staleuess that is fully as fatal as a physical stateness,
although one generally brings on the other.
DEMPSEY has nineteen first-round knockouts. There is a rumor
out to the effect that he would just as soon make it twenty before
the next fortnight has skidded by.
