There were some signs of strength in New York Stock Exchnnjrc, but
uncertainty was in evidence nnd dcclipcs occurred nenr close. Cramp
Shipbuilding was prominent on the Curb ns well as on the Philadel
phia exchange and in the outside market rose to a new top price of
147. Corn touched new top level for the season. Cotton advanced.
French and Italian exchange weakened. An extra dividend was de
clared by United States Food Products Corporation directors. Bar
silver declined slightly.

ber of stocks in today's trading, the market tone showed a. good deal of in
decision and uncertainty, with a large speculative clement fighting ad
vances on a belief that the situation in Europe, which indicated to them
a delay in (signing the peace treaty, would have a repressive influence on
bullish operations.
Money was not a factor, there being nn ntiplo mipply on the floor of
the exchange all through the day. At times the list generally showed strength,
but advances were not maintained In any group and most of the gains, which
were made during the forenoon, were materially rducd or wiped out before
the clone.
Virginia Chemical was one of the stocks which made new high records,
advancing more than fi points to above 82. T'nltcd Cigar Xtorrs rose to 100
nnd Republic Iron nnd Steel made n gain of more than 3 points, crossing 1)1.
There was heavy trading at the opening in Sinclair Oil, because of the
announcement of the development plnns of tlmt company and during the
lirst half of the day It advanced 2'j points to (i.V'4, but lost nearly nil this
gain on a reaction in the Into trading.
1'niteil States Steel ranged finni 100 to 107, but showed little net
change at the end of the day.
The bond mnrket was fairly active, with a continued good demand for
Iiihett issues. Some of the railroad bonds were btrong and there was active
trniling in the traction issues.

confusion of opinions with respect to the
factors now operating within the secu
rities market nnd to the future course of
the market.
While there was less bullish vifror in
the trndinj; today than cither on Tues
day or yesterday, the undertone was
firm throuRhout nnd there were ns usual
intervals of streiiRth here and there. It
wns a market which reflected confidence
in the fjcnernl situation and in ultimate
1 developments at the same time tint it
I reflected restraint, imposed by a doubt
I as to whether or not the (Jermnns would
sign the peace treaty. Will they sign?
This was the question asked on every
hand.
Perhaps the most frequent answer to
the inquiry vouchsafed wns in the form
of another question: Whether they do
or not will it make any difference to the
market? Some believe that prices have
already discounted the possibility of re
fusal in last week's movement. Others
think the previous bull demonstration
wns in the nature of discounting enemy
acquiescence in the trenty and that the
setback of last week was due to techni
cal conditions rendered acutely operative
by a (ombination of circumstances cur
tailing the money supply.
For the lirst time this week call loans
renewed today at 0 per cent for mixed
collateral and (i'i per cent for all-industrial
collateral, nt which level the
rate prevailed until midafternoon, when
I it dropped to 5 per cent, with limited
'demand for accommodation.
I Aside from this easier condition of
money there is the economic situation
! to consider when n break in the market
I is talked of as a possibility in the event

great crop of grains, the favorable in

is not to be expected, perhaps, that

the balance of the week. Trading today
wns in fair volume, although it did not
bespeak any great amount of public

I and possibly some moderate pool ac
1 tivity.
i The leathers, the equipments, some
of the oils, notably Sinclair and l'nn
i American nnd some individual issues
like American Cotton Oil, International
Nickel, Kelly-Springfield Tire, Tinted
iStntes Rubber nnd others, were conspic
uously strong. The motors, tractions
nnd shipping shares were in fairly good
form. The steels were more unsettled,
with gains largely confined to frac
tions, except Republic which at one
time advanced some three points. The
rails were steady, with here nnd there
a strong spot like Texas and Pacific,
Missouri Pacific aud Atchison.
The last phase of the session wns one
of reception. Most of the earlier gains
were cancelled, and in not n few cases
prices closed below the Wednesday level,
except that the Third and Fourth 4m
war loan bonds were firm.

Interest in today's' stock trading on the Philadelphia exchange was .largely
centered in Itnpid Transit trust certificates, William Cramp Shipbuilding nnd
Philadelphia Electric, nil of which were In good demand.
Both Transit certificates nnd Cramp certificates made records, the former
n high for the year and the latter reached a new top. Early in the session
the llnpid Transit shnres were active nnd bid up to 20, n trifle above yester
day's closing level, nnd they held firm through the day, while Cramps, although 1
in urgent demand, were not to be had, nnd advanced as much as 10 points on a
fmall turnover to 143, On the New York Curb they commnnded even more at
tention nnd rose from 134 to as high as 147. Reports were current in the Broad
street section of that city that new interests were trying torobtain control.
Philadelphia Elecric was active and firm, Lake Superior Corporation .held
steady as did General Asphalt, but Electric Storage llnttery, on a fair turnover,
yielded rather widely. I'cnn Hank stock was in demand, nnd advanced 4 points on
a trifling transaction. '
Other home issues were dealt in sparingly and showed irregular changes,
but none of importance.
Pennsylvania Ilailroad shaded slightly after being up a fraction, Reading
wns off slightly. Lehigh Valley held fairly steady and Mlnehill lost .
Steel common was only moderately active nnd reflected its early setback on'1
the big board by losing a fraction, although it had recorded an advance at one
time during the day.
Bond business wns fairly broad, but uninteresting. United Railways In
vestment 5s yielded 1 per cent on n email amount of business and Philadelphia
Electric first 5s were higher.
