Rush of Property Conveyances Far
Exceeds Normal
Property sales caused an unprecc-
dented rush of business at the recorder
of-deeds' office during the first four
months of this year, It was learned
. 5 today.
This department is now crowded
daily with title searchers and unless
j tho rush decreases the force of the
office, it Is said, will have to be in
creased. During the four months ending April
HO, 30,570 instruments were recorded,
or an increase of 12,320 over the same
period of last year. In order, to accom
modate those having bu?iness in this
department tne office will remain open
' until 5 p. m. daily except Saturday.
1 There was nn average of 200 mortgages
daily during the last week. This figin-c
is about three times the normal number
of. satisfactions recorded. Most of the
properties sold during the first four
J months were of the dwelling house class.
The, instruments recorded during the
first four months of the year had a
cash value of $30,183,157.

THOUGHT HIPPO 3 OF 'EM
Only Bumps Show Above Water at
Zoo Then Sambo Gasps
There's no doubt about it. Snmbo
didn't know how to size up n hippo.
In the first place somebody told him
that he ought to go out to the Zoo
to see the baby hoppopotnmus.
He got there yesterday just after the
mother hippo had sunk under the sur
fnco of the water, but not so far under
thnt the bulge of her body over her hind
legs nnd the bulge over her front legs
nnd the upper portion of her hend didn't
show.
The baby hippo vns standing on the
bank of the pond.
"Whnr's dat 'ere pickaninny hippo?"
cried Sambo.
"Why, there," snid the keeper, nnd'
pointed to the hippo standing on the
bank.
"Quit yo' klddin'. Dot's de ole
woman."
But just then the mother hippo rose
out of the water, her two bumps, head
and all.
"Goo' gracious!" gasped Sambo, "ah
done 'mngjncd dat nnimile was three

PIEZAPPROVESSALE
OF EMERGENCY FLEET
-
Former Director General of U.
S. Corporation Favors Plan
Suggested by Hurley
SAYS "SELL ALL OF SHIPS"
Tentative npprovnl of the Cnlted
Stntes shipping board's recommenda
tions to Congress for the sale of the
emergency merrlinnt fleet Is given Jjy
Charles Plea, former director genernl
of the Emergrney Fleet Corporation.
Edwnrd N. Hurley, rhnlrmnn of the
shipping bonrd, Inst Thursday recom
mended the sale of every merchant ship
built by the government during the
wnr nnd declared for the principle of
prlvnte ownership nnd operation.
From French Lick Springs?" Intl.,
where he Is spending n vncntion, Mr.
Piez replied to n request from the
Evenino Pi ni.it Ledger for his opin
ion on the advisability of the plan ns
follows :
"If this refers to the ultlmntc niin
of the shipping hoard, 1 heartily ap
prove, lint before selling any number
of these ships 1 feel we should bo rea
sonably sure we can dispose of substan
tially nil the csscls in the fleet. I
strrtngly recommend thnt we begin by
selling the smaller vessels and those
thnt do not fit Into the Ideal fleet Mr. j
Hurley Is engaged in developing. "
At least fifty ship of the emergency
fleet already have been sold. The most
recent sale was reported Saturday,
when the shipping board disposed of
twenty-two vessels, ranging from 7,10(1
to 81)00 tons each, nt ?'J10 n ton. This
figure nssures n small profit per ton to
the government, in spite of the ex
cessive cost nt which the vessels were
built under war prices.
