- Clilcngo, June 7. Bearish conditions
Icontlnuctl to domlnato the corn market
this morning, and the undertone was
weaker with locnl and commission
'houses frco sellers. The unsettled wire
situation had a decidedly unfavorable
ieffect, 'and support was weak.
, The .trouble with the telegraphers
nlready -hns reduced outside trade nnd
Is expected to cause a further falling
'off In business. Speculators in corn
cannot have more than 200,000 bushels
of this grain after the close of business
today.
Brokers were pessimistic ,ns to the
future of values, owing to Improved crop
and weather news, recent larger re
ceipts and expectations of n drop In
the cash article. The receipts here were
270 cars.
The condition of the new crop In
Argentina was said to be generally
g"ood.

REBOUND IN COTTON
WHEN SHORTS COVER
Rise Further Stimulated by
' Trade Demand and Rebuying
by
Sold-Out Bulls
New York, Juno 7. There wag a re
IinnnH In the cotton market today fol-
lowing further wcakne'ss early in the
session.
The change came a little after the be-
gtnlng of business, nnd was influenced
by an active covering movement, a de
wand from the trade for distant posi
tions and Tebuylng by sold-out bulls.
,TradIng was. active and Wall street
commission houses were less in evidence
as sellers.
The opinion was heard frequently that
the recent decline of nearly five cents
a pound bad thoroughly cleaned out the
'long interest and created a strong tcch
'hlcar position, which 'would be reflected
In a substantial .recovery should any
fresh bullish features develop.
Demand continued fairly active during
the late fornoon and thp close was firm
at a net advance of 40 to 52 points.

EVENING PUBLIC
SITUATION IN STEEL
MOST ENCOURAGING
Buying Orders Are Coming Into
the Market in Large
Volume
New Yorlc, June 7.. In no eeU
since the signing of the nrmi'tit'e lmv
the development" In the strtl situation
been as encouraging ns during the
period just closed. Hujliig orders' lime
tome into the market in large olumo,
with the nutomobile concerns having
taken first place nmong the consumers
nlio are now nctle.
The most iinpmtnnt order was that
frnm the flonrrnl Motors Corporation
to the I'nltcd States Steel Corporation
for .tiri.Ono tons of nriuus steel prod
ucts. When this became known It as
realized bv students of steel affairs that
the consumer of steel products nt least
hne come into the market with n Mm.
It is certain thnt had the manage
ment of the General Motor Corporation
believed that steel prices would not hold
nt the present quotations it would not
hne plneed its contracts at tins time,
nnd the fact thnt this order is the larg
est which has been reccucd from nu
individual concern for peace purposes
in years naturally caused much com
ment. .There Is a general belief that other
consumers w ill come into the market
with their requirements for the future,
nnd that the improement now prevail
ing will expand from this time on.
This will lend to an increase in the
production of steel products, and steps
toward this end have already been taken
by some companies.
The best estimates in the trade are
that the steel plnnts of the country are
now operating nt about 05 per cent of
capacity, with the mills of the steel
corporation making a somewhat better
showing than the Independent and small
er nroducers. However, as stated,
virtually all the companies are planning
further increases In activities, nnd u
Is certain that this would not be done
if It were not believed thnt the output
of the plants will bo required to supply
the demand.
The unfilled tonnage statement of the
United States Steel Corporation will
be made public next Saturday, and the
showing is reasonably expected to be
considerably better than those of the
last three or four months. New busi
ness during May, which period the re
port will cover, was better than in
April, and toward the end of the month
the improvemeut apparently was gaining
momentum.
