tional gains of the day amounting to extremely large advances following
the Improvement that had already been recorded from the low levels of the
year. A largo number of stocks mord up more than 10 points nnd advances
' of 5 to 10 points were so plentiful thnt they could not he mentioned in full
detail.
This was due in part to the huge accumulation of buying orders in tho
extended holjday Interval, but ther were indications of persistent buying
for important blinking Interests, which made the demand nssume a compe
titive charnctcr at frequent intervals during the day.
What the market did may be understood by the fact that Studebaker rose
0 points in the first hour to l-.'t'-i, tieneral Motors more than 10 points
to 12111',, American Woolen rose 12 points to 10!l., (Julf Steel to 81 and
Mexican Petroleum, Oi points to 1!I5!,.
American Hide and Leather advanced more than 4 points, making a
new high record. Central Leather was also in urgent demand all through
the day, moving up 7 points to 102'

Pacific advanced to 11ii, the highest price reached In recent times.
T'nlfed States Steel gave a falve iinpicssion at flic stnrt, when some of
the traders made it yield from 109Uj to HIS, but all Hie stock offered wan
tnken and in the late afternoon it ranged above 110.
Marino issues were exceptionally weak during the morning, .Marine
common falling more than .'! points to 12 and the preferred, nftcr selling at
121-lj, dropped to 120, but both stocks made luisk rallies In flip Into trading.
The bond market continued one pronounced strength, with the Victory
notes again selling at 100 and there was substantial gains in n number of
railroad issues, Southern Pacific convertibles being a feature. The local
traction issues were also active and strong.

mean standing still. .Mexican petro
leum crossed l'.in for a six point gain,
American Woolen soared 11 points and
Central I.eather-ndded 7 points to its
recent achievements.
When the pace in one qunrter became
too rapid to reasonably endure, buying
as quickly shifted to new stocks and in
the afternoon the steels, equipments nnd
rails, which had been compaiativcly
dormant, came to the fore.
In the face or nil this strength, the
Mercantile Marine shares were dis
tinctly weak, to the distraction pf many
a trader long of the stock, on the theory
that the liquidation plan would go
through without opposition and prove
highly beneficial for stockholders. The
annual meeting of the company tv-os.
held this afternoon nnd earnings for
1918 giyen out, showing n moderate de
crease compared with the preceding
j ear.
Announcement was made that 15. F.
Goodrich stockholders would be asked
to vote on a $2.",000,000 increase in the
preferred stock, only ?1!,000,000 of
which is to be issued at this time.
Trading quieted down somewhat in
the last hour and the prices eased off
in the profit-taking
sales. The general list, however, main
tained its firm tone. National Con
duit, , International Paper, Virginia
Cnrolinn and other specialties were ad
vanced in the late trading. American
Ice touched a new high at 04.
A million shares of stock had changed
hands by the time the session was half
over, 'lucre was no particular news to
inspire trading sentiment. It was
rather an absence of unfavorable de
velopments over the week-end which
permitted tho bull movement of mere
than three months' duration to continue
of its own momentum.
With the public in the market and
getting in deeper every day, nothing
apparently can check the runaway save
decisively bad news, vords of warn
ing, such as contained in the National
City Bank's monthly bulletin against
the dangers of speculation, were ignored
by the rank nnd file in Wall street.
Many professionals s(ild stock this
morning, however, as a result of the
bank's bulletin, but shorts were com
pletely put to rout before the session
bad progressed far.
Intimations from Washington that
the government might have to again re
sort to public borrowing to meet defi
cits were decidedly unpleasant, but
without obvious influence cm the market.
Pools had a field day and pushed
their specialties forward from 2 to 10
points without difficulty. In such an
excited session there were necessarily
wide jumps between quotatioris as well
aa sharp declines and recoveries. New
high prices for the year were registered
by a long list of stocks. Crucible Steel,
which is apparently subject to pool
manipulation, featured the steel shares,
advancing more than four points in the
early trading.
Other steels did nothing until late In
the day when United -States Steel got up
around 110 and Ilethlehem Steel around
S3. Southern iPoeifie, was the feature
of the rails, tseliiug at a new high of
no.

filing of charters at the State Depart
ment recorded in recent years, also
one of the largest in point of amounts
of capital stock. Charters total nearly
400.
A charter was filed today for the
Stanley Company of America, with au

Undertone Firm and Several Stocks Score Wide Gains Tran
sit Certificates Show Most Momentum, but Yield
Philadelphia stock trading was moderntely broad today after the extended
holiday, and white the tone wnrf firm few issues developed activity of interest.
Rapid Transit certificates showed more momentum than anything else on the
home list, nnd although they were Inclined downward they finished above the
low of the session. On the -other hand, Philadelphia Traction advanced as much
as 1 points, but Union Traction was lower.
On moderate transactions Hake Superior held steady, J. 0. Ilfill and Lehigh
Navigation each moved up 1 point, Electric Storage Battery gained the same
amount, but yielded part of Its ndvaucc, while United Gas Improvement scored
n wide galu, United Stntes Companies of JCcw Jersey was marked up 2 points
and Philadelphia Electric was firm,
Tonopah Mining was lower, but Tonopah -Belmont held steady nnd Gen
eral Asphalt also came out unchanged,
Pennsylvania Itailroad, Heading Company and I.chigh-Vollcy were higher
and N est Jersey and Seashore gained 1 point. .
Steel common scored n w idc advance, following its course in New Tork, and
Baldwin, although slow, was much above last Thursday's clftslng level.

Business Conditions Reported Improving
TJio Tune report on business by the Federal Kescrvc Bank of this city says t
'The business situation continues to show improvement in many lines.
Conservation in buying is still apparent, but reductions in prices are not looked
for for the present. Itctail merchants uniformly continue to report o large
volume of business nnd they expect further inercascsyns the year progresses.
'Loads made to member banks by the Federal Itcscrvo Bank during the
month of April amounted to $01(1,038,257 ; tho nvcrage daily amount of earn
ing assets was .$208,440,030. Federal reserve notes in circulation decreased
$2,000,000 during the month. The check collection department handled 2,602,
