Stock prices wcie generally lower early, with sharp breaks in
petiulciini issues, but buying wine brought, advances near close. Curb
prices receded, with Sinclair (iulf n feature, tlint issue dropping moro
thnn 'JO points, then lccoveiing. Corn and cotton were lower. Sterling
was higher and francs declined to new low level in foreign exchange
market. The weekly New York bank statement showed increases in
average and actual loans, and deposits and a gain in average reserve, but
a decrease in the actual Hank clearings throughout the country this week
were above last week and corresponding period of 1918. Unfilled ton
nage of the United States Steel Corporation on April 30 was today
reported 020,887 (on less than cm March Ml. Bar silver rose in New

and Phiadelphla Company cumulative preferred yielded a trifle. N

of the railroads in their rehabilitation plans.
Officials of southern roads state that traffic is close to 25 per cent under a
year ago at this time and that while general merchandise nnd mibcellancous
tonnage shows an irregular trend, it should not he expected that business In
the south xv ill approximate what it was during the wur. Comparing with normal
conditions, trade and traffic are favorable.

The hankers made it clear the drain
upon their resources caused by the ne
cessity of advancing funds to the rail
roads has become too great. They
suggested an organized effort be made te
get the forthcoming Congress to expe
dite legislation which wjll replenish the
revolvlug fund of the railroad admin
istration. ltankcrs, in co-operation with the
War Finance Corporation, have taken
care of all tlie requirements of the rail

Drag River for Man In Camden
The police of Camden are grappling
for tlie body of a well dressed niau who
is believed to have jumped from the
wharf of tbe Camneu Cokc-WorkB early

men of the' plant, said the man walked
out to the end of the wharf and disappeared.

Wall street, brought about by unsettled
conditions in the stock market, realiz
ing by commission houses and some sell
ing orders from the South, led to re
cessions in cotton today after a firmer
start.
Toward the end the tone Improved,
offerings being cheeked by fears about
over-Sunday weather in the belt nnd
larger sales of the spot article In the
South.
Reports from the goods trade were
bullish, reflecting strength in all de
partments. Sales of print cloths nt Fall River
for the wek amounted to 230,000 pieces
nud exceeded the production. The week
end statistics were about a standoff and
were not a factor.
Trading throughout the session was
not very 'active.
Late in the morning, local covering"
and renewed trade buying promoted a
partial recovery. The close was steady
at a net decline of 1323 points.
