there were three members of the or

Mr. Mnquarre, plajlng, respectively,

and gratification that the orches

furnish three soloists, really four, in
cluding Mr. Ferir. in a scries ot con
certs of the standard which Mr. Sto
kowski provided, and it may be said
in passing that these four do not by
tiny means exhaust the solo possibilities
of the orchcstin. To mention only a
few, Mr. Tabuteau. oboe: Mr. Honade,
clarinet: Mr. Kreuger. bassoon: Mr.
Anton Homer, French horn, and Mr.
Torello, eontrabass, are fully capable
In technique, beauty of tone and general
nrtistry, of playing concertos with or
chestra, and doubtless would be given
the opportunity of proving this asser
tion were the instruments which they
play those which best lend themselves
to elaborate solo numbers. They are,
however, instruments which show to
the, best advantage in short melodic pas
sages and to give color and volume to
the more fully orchestrated parts. This
i ics not take any account either of the
biass nor of n number of members of
the string section who also arc capable
of doing solo work.
The. recitation with orchestra was an
unusual number and it met with n cor
dial reception, although Mr. Liteu's
Belgian nationality and the fact Hint
the war wus still on at that time may
have had something to do with the ex
pressions of appreciation of a form of
entertainment which, strictly speaking,
may be open to some question ns u

Vas. The guest conductor. M. Cath
erine, is remembered more tor his de
tailed knowledge of the involved and
complicated scores which he conducted
than for any especial qualities of tem
perament or personality.
HOWF.VKU, it is in the make-up of
the programs themselves rather than
in the personalities of the performers
that the greatest interest lies, for this
article Is not intended ns n review of
the musical season in Philadelphia. Of
the twenty-five afternoon and evening
concerts of the Academy scries, sym
phonies were pln.tcd at all but three,
Uiese concerts being the' fourth, fifth
and' fifteenth.
On each program, however. Mr.
Stokowski put a work of la'rge dimen
sions, to take the place of a symphony.
At the fourth concert, Uimxky-Korsn
kolt's "Cappriccio I'spagnol" was the
substitute: nt the fifth. Mar-Dowell's
"Indian Suite," and at the fifteenth.
Skryabin'H "Poeme de l'Kxtnse," this
being the concert at which Mr. Stokow
ski made his speech advocating modera
tion in the judgment of large modern
orchestral compositions.
Of the symphonists, P.eetlioven nnd
T,.nnikowskv had four each, that is.
counting the "Pntlielique" of the latter
as two works, because it was perform
ed twice. Ilrahms was represented
with two bymplionies, and twelve other
composers with one each. Of the total
compositions g'nen at tlie home series
pf fifty concerts, Iteethovcn led, with
twelve works (Leouore No. V. being
played twice); Tschaikowsky, with
eight; Brahms and Mozart, six each ;
Wagner, four; Herlioii, Debussy, Itim-uky-Korsakoff
and Chausson, three each,
uid Cesar Frnnck, Shnbert, Chabricr,
MacDowell, JtachmamuotT nnd Mnini
s!iiii. two each. Tins
includes solo
numbers as well as orchestral works.
HOWEVKU, when the orchestra
went out of town the ratio of the
composers represented on the programs
changed materially. In all the con
certs of the orchestra for the seasou,
Including the Academy scries of fifty
and oil the out-of-town concerts, ns

Then oainu Heetiiovcn with
twenty-seven, Ilrahms with seventeen.
Wagner and Mozari with twelve each,
nnd Debussy with seven. 'This also in
dtides the numbers played by the solo
ists. This, change wuh due primarily to tho
fact that nil -Tschaikowsky programs
were given nt several places as well as
because it is not always advisable lo
give a strictly classical symphony con
cert In all the cities which the orchestra
visits in tho course of n,season. Thus
the Murchc Slave wns performed niue
times during the wiiou, only once, of
