16 STARS IN PENTATHLON
By TKI) MEREDITH
rpHE western trams nrriycrt iu Fhila-
" dclphin yesterday afternoon, took the
kinks out ot tlirir Ire on Tranklin
Field and announced they were rendy
lo meet all comets this afternoon wheu
the Penn relnys get under way.
The schoolborn will take up most of
the afternoon, but at 2:30 p. in. the bis
erent of the day will start with the
T'cntathlon, when sixteen men compete
for the collegiate all-round champion
ship. One ot the ptomisinc competitors In
this event was seen yesterday in Had
dock, of Kanra". This man comes with
a jrreat record, but he has a field againt
him which will be hard to lie.il.
Gilfallan, of 'olre Dame, another
all-round man, worked out with a team
mate, Eddie Mcehan, a Philadelphia
boy. Gilfallan looks fat to me, and 1 I
Ho not sec how he expects to hold his
own against the others in the running
events. However, he has jumped twenty-one
feet six inches and in order to
do this he must have considerable speed.
The other men who will be strong
(ontendcrs for the all-round title arc
ltartlcs, of Penn; Thompson, of Dart
mouth, and Lc Grcnde, ot Georgetown.
I'nm IOoks Good
The 6rst lelay event for the colleges
will start nt 4 o'clock, when the sprint
mrdlcy fa staged. This will he a great
raie. With three teams so eicnly
matched it is hard to pick a favorite. I
like Penn since I lime seen them woik
all spring and know just what they can
do. Pittsburgh is faorcd by others be-
.auec Shea is running, and the West
ininws inc nicago quauei cannot ue
beaten
, . . .
Penn and Chicago nic evenly
Roth
balanced, while the Smoky City is dc
pending on its star to make up the losses
f his teammates. I know that if Shea
Is right he can take care of twenty
yards, but if he is called on to make up
a greater distance it will be more than
could bo expected of him. This rnce de
pends primarily on the half-miler, and
lure Js where Chicago comes into the
limelight.
Cornell FaNt
The distance relay looks like -a battle
between Cornell, Chicago and Lafay
ette. In this race, more than the sprint
medley, the last man is the big factor. '
With a good fast miler a team can be I
sure to figure, and in this case they all
three have good milers.
Dresser, of Cornell, nnd Kleinspchu, '
of Lafayette, ore both intercollegiate
i hampions and will meet in this race,'
both limning the mile. They hac rec-
ords of 4 :20 and are going as fast as ,
can he expected at this time of the year. I
Tho 440-yard hurdles race will brink I
out some good men, with Church, of
Harvard, the favorite. Penn has Fra
zier and Smith.
FIRST NO-HIT GAME
Germantown, However, Scores Run
Of Jack Williams
Thc first no-hit game of the scholastic
reason was credited to Jack Williams,
the Episcopal Academy twirler, yester
day afternoon, when the Churchmen de
feated the visitors from Manhcim in
the Inleracadcraic League contest by n
score of 0 to 1. Episcopal now has two
games won and one lost, and is second
to Penn Charter in the race for the
title.
JVilliams fanned twelve players and
was jiven excellent support.
