V. S. Steel Attracts Attention Philadclphians Buy Baldwin.
No Weakness on Profit-Taking
New York, April 21. This was the day of Inrgrst transactions on the
stock exchange so far on this movement, with the million-shnro mark passed
earl.v in the aternnon nftcr2."0,000 shares linii heen traded in during the
first fifteen minutes. The dealings from the opening wf re of the most vig
orous character, with buying orders coming in n flood from many sources,
while nt the same time large interests here realized profits on immense
lines of long stock, causing a supply that only a market of record-breaking
demand could absorb without violent breaks.
In spite of this heavy selling there was no etldence of weakness at any
time and, although recessions ranging from 1 to 5 points occurred after the
establishment of stocks nt a high level in the early trading, most of these
declines were recovered without any effort at manipulation, and there was
no need of either pool activities or united action by any speculative clement
lo maintain the upward course of the market.
In nil respects the dny was another chapter in the 9lory of the great
est bull movement Wall Street has ever known, not thnt "violent advances
were made but that the opportunity was presented for these profit-taking
sales and for the shifting of large holdings to new hands.
United States Steel common wns held close to par, selling nil the way
from 100 to !!). hut the railway equipment stocks, which were easily
moved, attracted attention by brisk advances, with Railway Steel Spring
making the greatest gain in this group.
Baldwin l.ocomotixe was prominent, with Philadelphians among lead
ing hujers.
There was a diversion of interest to many of the lower-priced Indus
trials. International Paper advancing more than 4 points to 5-, and Amer
ican Writing Paper preferred rose 3 points to 52.
The marine issues swung over a wide range. American International
fist advanced to 91 and then declined to SC. Marine preferred, nfter ad
wincing mote than 1 point to US3, dropped to 11", with a sharp rally from
that price in the late trading. The common stock rose about 3 points to
above 38. n new high record for the movement.
(ioodrieh Rubber wns a feature in the afternoon, advancing about 4
points to nbene 71
. . In the bond market the diief feature was the increased offerings of
the fourth Liberty 4'is, which forced that issue down to J13.30 soon after
noon.
There was heavy trading in many industrial issues, with the Pierce
Oil and Sinclair Oil f-eeurities among the most prominent features.

bokeu nt noon, Judge Gary took pains
to expound the situation of the steel
people in the price question, and at
the same time reasserted his confidence
in the prosperity of the country. He
did not venture to give n definite date
for revival of the steel industry or of
Industry in genernl. Facts and figures
give the lie, he said, to prophesies of
business demoralization.
Word came from Washington that the
conference, scheduled for today, be
tween members of the Industrial board
and of the railroad administration, had
been postponed because of Judge
Lovett'a illness, a conference which
called for unusual Interest because of
President Vilson's cabled desire that
the matter should be adjusted without
interference from htm.
Money conditions were not materially
changed. Call loans renewed at 5
per cent, which rate prevailed until
late, when It dropped to 5lA per cent
Foreign exchange was quiet, largely
because observance of the Easter holi
days abroad. Lire were slightly easier,
but other rates were steady, after heavi
ness in sterling earlier In the cession.

fee market at the reopening this morta
ing and first prices showed advances of
10 to 30 points. ,
Thc continued strength in Brazil over
our holidays and a more active demand
in the local spot market, where it was
reported that Bio 7s sold at 17c on the
spot, were the chief factors on thc ad
vance. During tha morning, the market con
tinued firm on trade buying and further
covering, with July selling at 10.40 and
December at 15.40, or about 20 to 30
points above last Thursday's closing
figures.
It seemed that the reports ot an in
creasing demand for spot coffee, com
bined with the evident firmness of Bra
zil, was leading to a broadening of spec
ulative Interest and commission house
brokers had orders both wnvs on the
advance, which attracted some realizing
by om longs.

Among the bullish influences were
roustnnt reiterations by food leaders of
Europe's enormous demands upon us for
all foodstuffs; statements thnt foreign
ers would have fo take rye, barley nnd
other coarse grains, ns the United
States virtually had no more wheat to
spare from this crop, and strength in
hog products.
Commission houses easily took care of
all offerings on recessions, nnd 'shorts
were compelled to Cover as values moved
upward.
Oats also were strong on good buvinc
by commission houses. Trade was ac
tive and outside interest was broad.
A leading elevator interest sold hcavllv
