The dedarntion ot the extra dividend of 10 per cent on .Marine pre
feued, announied nfter the dose on Thursday, was responded to with nn
advance of 'J'4 points to 1 IS'i in the preferred slock at the opening, and
American International Coiporntion moved up 3 points to S8'i.

American Hide and Leather prefericd lose more than - points to 1007ii

In the steel issues American Steel Foundries was again prominent,
moving up more than - points to above SO. and Railway Steel Springs

Company.
After opening fit 118. n gain of J", points over last night's close, real
zing sales brought the price down to 114, Inter recovering to 117 nnd touch
ing a new high of 120 lit the last hnlf hour of trading. Buying, ns has featured
the movement for the last few dajs, was in small lots and the source of pur-'
chases was carefully concealed, being distributed among n number of houses.
Ihe remnlnder of the list wns comparatively quiet. Klectric Storage Bat

corn apparently was not affected by

the market, after an irregular start, de
veloped uniform strength this morning.
Commission houses were on both sides
at first, selling on hard spots and buving
on declines. Most of the pit traders
favored the buying side.
Some of the purchasing was based I
on unsettled weather in the west nnd
fears that muddy roads may consider
ably delay needed arrivals. A jump
of 4c a bushel in rye. lo ?1.72. had a
bullish effect. Trade was active and
mlxcjl.
May opened at $1.58 to $1.59
i of the stock exchange lost little of its
vigor by reason of the fnit that il was
preceded by n holiday and will be fol
lowed bv one. AVhat few develop
ments there were over yesterday's re
cess could scarcely be construed as
otherwise than favorable nnd the mar
ket opened this morning with a rush
of buying in industrial specialties.

the coppers. President Wilson's action
toward adjusting the steel price con
troversy was regarded with favor, but
steel stocks did not do much. The motor
stocks were taken up again when trad
ing quieted in other quarters and
marked up a point or two. The eitra
dividend of $10 a share declared on
Marine preferred stimulated demand for
