TRADING SHOWS SLACKENING
TENDENCY ON NEW YORK 'CHANGE
Movements Are Mixed, With Vigorous Advances for
Some Groups, While Others Decline Rails Be
come Prominent Reading Company Strong
Now York, Mnich 31. Trading on tho stock p-tcIiariEO today was
moderately quiet, compared with tho vigorous dealings that havo been
In progress on tho exchange for many weeks, and there wore at times
Indications of a slackening off of the buying power which mado many
think that the bull movement is, for tho time, becoming stale and needs
some new Incentive lo give It renewed animation.
Irregular changes at the opening were attributed In banking circles
to the manner In which the financial world Is beginning to view tho
long extended Peace Conference in Paris and the delay In recording
definite results fiom tho deliberations nt the peace table. This feeling
had an Influence in Iho trading In some of the foreign bonds and caused
diminished demand for tho leading Industrial stocks for a time.
After the first few minutes, however, advances wcro In order, with
some stocks moving up wit ha good deal of vigor, but from a period
after the opening until the close there was no unislon In the market
operations, some gioups moving up when concentrated buying occurred,
with the general list lemainlng nt a standstill.
Corn Products was one of the most prominent features, advancing to
the new high recoid of G03, and attention was attracted to Central
Leather, which rose more than 2 points to 77.
Aiotiml midday the railroad stocks were forced Into ptomlnence,
Southern Pacific advancing 1 to 102, and Heading Hi lo 84.
Then there was a demonstration of activity and strength In tho
traitlon shares, with Interborough preferred advancing 4 points to 16V&
nnd Biooklyn Rapid Transit and InterborouRh common also moving
up, but this upturn was followed bv a sharp reaction in the late, aftei
noon L'nited States Steel common alternated between strength and weak-ne-"
all through the ia. selling as low as 073i In the morning and ns
high as 99'i in the afternoon
There was a falling off In the volume, of business In the bond mar
ket, which was most noticeable In a number of the leading foreign
issues, with modeiate pressure In those securities attributed to the
vailous statements in regard to the situation In Europe.
Some of tho rallioad bonds showed strength In the afternoon, and
tliete was a better tone to the market for the l.ibeity Issues, but with
out mateilal change in prices
