Uneasiness Over European Situation Disappears Mexi
can "Pete" Has Widest Advance Steel and
Other Industrials and Copper Strong
.,.. New. York, March 27. The stock market seemed to have all tho
reaction that was required In the last two tlnjs to make the bltuatlon
again BtronB nnrt Induce a resumption of bullish operations on a
larpo scale, and this morning orjr.inbcd IiuIiik wns apaln In evidence,
with those, committed to tho bull side show In as much confidence In
tho outlook as at any time since the upward movement started nunj
weeks ago.
Tho ost impoitant feature of the situation, as demonstrated in the
early trading, was tho absence of supply around current quotations and
thts condition became mj pronounced as to ciuse general uneasiness
amonR those who had put out short lines of stock since the beginning
of the week and they wero among the most urgent buers on the
upward movement, which was In progicss from the opening.
No uneasiness was shown over the European situation, and the
general Imprcs&lon pre ailed that securities of this countiy must stand
in a higher class, simply because of the unrest prevailing In Europe.
The greatest gain of the day was made in Melean 1'etroleum, which
rose more than 5 points, with the upward movement accompanied by
reference to the situation that must be created if the Soviets assume con
trol of tho oil wells of Gallcla.
I'nlted States Steel w is steadily bought, one house taking 13,000
shares and helping put the price up more than 1 point to tt'. Other
steel industrials made gains of 1 point or mote
The copper stocks acted strong and the dividend action on Insplia
tion Copper was assumed to reflect a promise of better times in the
copper metal trade, the dividend being Hcd at the rate of $B a share,
or moio than Is paid on either Anaconda or I'tnh Coppci .
Many specialties were In active demand, with tJeneral Motois and
Industrial Alcohol both advancing about 3 points,, nnd some of the
low-priced stocks, including American Linseed common and Amcikjn
Writing Paper preferred, rose more than 2 points
There was heavj trading In the fourth I,lbeit -ls ngaln todaj.
That issue, after its decline to the low record jcsterda, found support
and nude a moderate gain In todaj's trading.

Knr York, March 27. Tha cotton
market this morning recovered a good
part of yesterday's loss. First prices
Tvere up from 30 to 58 points, showing
about equal rise on new and old style
contracts.
Tim early advance carried prices 46 to
62. points nbovo last night's closing
flures, or about 70 to 77 points above
the low level of yesterday afternoon.
Tiere was enough realizing to check
bjt rmo upward movement around these
fe"J?, prices and caused reactions of several
r2jT points, but the offerings were well
enoug-n absorbed to give the market a
teady undertone.

Prices Increased from the opening in

Mining, Makes Up Bulk of Business.
William Cramp Strong
There was boarder trading today on the Philadelphia Stock Exclmnse,
but business was generally uninteresting. Trlco changes were mixed and

its recent showing, and was off ilrtually nil through tho session, whllo
the only other Issue to develop momentum of Interest Tonopah Mining
held steady and unchanged. On a few small transactions William Cramp
certificates recovered yesterday's loss of 1 points.
J. G. Brill, which was active nnd strong jestcrdny, did not appear until
near midday and did nothing later, while Its price moved up to $8.
vMost of the other local leaders came out In trifling odd lots. Lako
Superior Corporation was firm, United Gas Improvement gained ns much ps
, Philadelphia Company cumulative preferred was lower, whllo Phlladelu
phla ElectHc, Philadelphia Traction, American Stores and American Gas
appeared unchanged.
United States Steel common was slow, but higher In line with Its courso
on the big board, and Baldwin Locomotive, on a small turnover, made a
substantial advance.
Gross earnings of the Pennsylvania Railroad lines west during Febru
ary totaled ?6,77r.,-759, a gain of $149,405 oer February, 1918, but the net
