ket's Trend Is Downward
Tho lpcul stock market was fairly broad today, but In lino with the
trend In New York, where tho coming holiday caused a waiting disposition,
prices wer6 Irregular and mostly to lower levels. Electric Storage Battery
continued to show activity -and strength at tho opening, advancing for a
substantial gain to a ncwjitgh for this movement of 71?i. But, while It
remained by fur the active leader, It took a downward course around
midday and sold below the previous close.
Talk of buying for General Motors and General Ulectrlc Interests con
tinued, but In some leading quarters these stories were thought to be
without foundation and this, together wltlv the denial by President Henry
Lloyd of a rumor omlnatlng from New York that tho control was belpg
bought by the National Carbon Compare)-, was thought to have stopped milch
of the demand. v
United Gas Improvement was weak, losing moie than 1 po'lnt on a fair
tui nover; WJlllam Cramp certificates yielded slightly and the only other Issue
showing activity of Interest Tonopah Mining held steady and unchanged.
Announcement was made today that the Philadelphia Exchange would be
open tomorrow, although all New York markets would honor returning N,ew
Yoik troops with a holiday.

Cotton Growers Discuss Acreage
Memphis, Tenn., March 24. Delegates
from virtually all of the cotton growing
states met here today to discuss cotton
acreage reduction and hear reports of
state committees In the campaign to
secure a reduction in acreage of one
third under that of 1918. The meeting
was called by Governor Pleasant, of
Louisiana, permanent chairman of the
acreage reduction movement.
