I there was some hope of the compan de
claring an extra dividend out of funds
already available for the purpose
As usual there was no little stic-ngth
among the specialties The sugar oil and
chemical groups made n good showing
on the whole. There were one or two
strong spots among the rails, particularly
Beading and Texas and Pacific, but there
was no great Initiative manifest in that
department
Prices dropped away from the top-ln
the last hour and In some cases like
Mexican Petroleum, United States In
dustrial Alcohol and othej-s, there wero
rather heavy net dccllril-EKSelllng pres
sure was not exerted Very vigorouslj,
however. Liberty Bonds were steady to
firm
Much of the hesitation apparent to
day was attributable to the conference
ot the steel manufactuiers in Washing
ton with the newly created lndusttial
committee to discuss price revision
Whatever pi Ice changes maj result, savs
the Iron Age. the weeks market has
further emphasized the downward
tendency.
That Journal refers to reports of sales
of basic Iron at $23 at furnace, a reduc
tion of $5 a ton In semifinished steel
there was a sale tepresentlng a con
cession of $6 a ton from prices pre
vailing In the eaily das of the jear
Ferro-manganesei has gone the same
way, tho supply far exceeding the demand.
The week's delay In the conference
has not lessened the problem for the
manufacturers' committee There is a
feeling among the leading producers of
steel that price cuts at this time will
not produce the desired buying revival
Tho Iron Age remarks significantly that
the fact that "tho government has no
bujing program and thus cannot give
practical sanction to steel prices that
may be fixed is a serious drawback "
The market In French exchange
steadied, franc checks being quoted at
5,69 francs to the dollar, as compared
with the recent low of CiOVi francs.
Thero was an easier trend among the
neutral rates.
There was little change in the money
situation. The trading rate for nearby
dateB in time funds remained at B'j per
cent. Call loanB ranged from 4 'a to 5
per cent, the former the renewal rate.
Cotton was quiet and heavy Corn
and oats were also subjected to some
