The Philadelphia Stock Market na, broad today after a ilutl openlnR, nnd
the undertone was firm, but, with few cxceptlona, business In home nlmres
was confined to odd lots.
United States Steel common was the active lender, and following Its
Upward course on the big board It showed u substantial advance. This
buying movement was generally attributed to optimistic statements made
to steel men In New York yesterday by Judge Gary, chairman of the cor
poration. 'There was a fair turnover of Electric Storage Battery and It advanced
i, while Tonopah Belmont, the other home loail leader, yielded after a
smalt advance at the start. J. O. Brill, which made' a sensational gain and.
was very active yesterday, did little and was slightly lower by mldafternoon,
although It gained a trifle early. .
Tractions were generally Inclined upward, nlthough changes were small.

phia Company common yielded to 36, off .
Halls were firm hut slow. Heading Company moved up 1 point, but
Pennsylvania and I.ehlgh Valley were unchanged.
In the bond division Lake Superior Income us were fairly actle. Phlla-

Additional General Asphalt Shares Listed
Announcement was made today that the stock list committee of the
Bhlladelphla Exchange had listed 11,044,000 additional common stock and
$860,000 additional preferred of the General Asphalt Company.
Later, the A.sphalt'' Company Issued the following statement, explaining!
reasons for new listings ;
"At the time of the reorganization of the Asphalt properties there were
Issued $14,000,000 of preferred Rtock and $17,000,000 of common stock, full
paid, In exchange for the purchase of properties. Of this amount $14,000,000
of the preferred and $10,000,000 of the common were set aside to meet the
exchange of other securities, the settlement of claims nnd the expenses of
reorganization. Seven million dollars of the common stock was held In
trusf. to take care of the conversion privilege which attached to the pre
ferred stock.
"Of late n rlumber of tenders of preferred shares have been made for
conversion Into common. It, therefore, became necessary for the company
to provide for listing 'the shares which were held for the purpose of
meeting this 'conversion privilege. . In this connection the company also
