in good demand and advancing. United States Steel was off, but other
steel Industrials moved upward. Reading Company was strong. Curb
trading was active, but price changes were narrow. Corn was inclined
downward. Cotton business was small. French exchange reacted.
Bank clearings throughout the country were much above last week.
The New York weekly bank statement showed a small decrease in

New YorK, March 1, Although the Street generally was disposed
today to fight against the market and to cause declines In stocks which
had been established at higher levels, there Mrs no Indication of weakness
In any group except the local traction Issued.
Marine stocks were again In good demand, with American Interna
tional Corporation advancing to 63 and' Marine preferred was firm, al
though It failed to Indicate further absorption by the banking Interests,
due perhaps to a halt being necessary In the accumulation In order to
finance nnd transfer the large nmount of stock already bought.
I'nlted States Steel common was under pressure for a time, declining
'i to 91i, but there was a steady demand for the slock nnd It more than
recovered this slight loss In the later trading. Other steel industrials,
especially Baldwin Locomotive, Crucible and American Steel Foundries,
were in brisk demand, with the last-named stock moving up about 3 points
to 83.
United Cigar Stores, which Is controlled by the Whalen Interests to
a greater extent than ever before, moved up 2',i points, lifting the high
record to 131H.
The railroad stocks were more prominent in the training, with Read
ing advancing more than 2 points to above 84, and gains ot more than
1 point were made In Union Pacific, Southern Pacific and a number of
other Issues In the railroad list.
The general belief that, u'lless advanced fares are granted by the
State Legislature, recelvershliTJ must be ordered for the Interhorough
system, made the Issues of t?it company weak all through the early
trading.
Government bonds were heavily traded In, with, a firmer tone shown

Chicago. March 1. Business in corn
was on a small scale this morning. The
market opened steady to a shade easier,
with some selling by an Important com
mission house, but rallied on covering
by shorts. Offerings were fairly liberal
on the hard spots.
Traders appeared to believe that
everything depended upon the coming
action by the food adlnlnletratloni on
hog quotations, and there was a dis
position to go slow until this matter
had been settled. In the meantime the
movement continues light, with little
prospect for any accumulation for some
months.!
On the other hand, the demand for
the cash article waa slow, and bears
pointed to the large surplus in Argen
tina. The arrivals here today were
ninety-one cars,
March opened unchanged at $1.31',,
but later sold at $1.31;. May opened
at $1.2S8 to $1.25, against $1.26 at
