High Points in Today's Financial News
Advances were the order on New York Stock Exchange. Pool and
bull combinations forced gains of from 2 to 7 points. Some issues
reacted after improvement. Activity continued on the curb, with most
stocks scoring advances. Corn declined, duo to uncertainty of hog
prices after tomorrow. Cotton was higher. Foreign exchange was
without feature.

American Car and Foundry was dliectly Influenced by new of tlio
absorption of tlio Canadian plant and advanced more than 2 points to
aboc 93, but lost part of this gain on a reaction In tho afternoon.
Strength was shown nt times In Baldwin Locomotive and Crucible,
but those stocks apparently had little outside following.
Tho motor stocks becamo tho most prominent features, General Mo
tors advancing 5 points to 85 nnd Jvjax Ituhber rising 7 points to 80T.
Distillers Securities and Industilal Alcohol demanded attention around
midday, when there was a sharp upturn In both these Issues.
Marine prcferrtd made a gain of more than 1 point to 102, most of
which was lost in the late trading. The petroleum stocks moved In an
Irregular manner.
Tliero were advances at times In some of the railroad Issues, Southern
Taclflc moving up l' to 103i and Pittsburgh and West Virginia ad
anced to 40?,, with a reaction to 30.
Tobacco Products was again strong, advancing more than 1 point to
DO?,. Central Leather gained 2 points to 6-41,.
Trading In tho Liberty Issues contlnue'd the most Important feature
of the bond market. The fourth 4Us sold down to 94.04.

ment of the llink of England show a

decreased 909,000; circulation Increased
768,000; bullion decreased 140,991;
other securities decreased 1.017,000;
other deposits Increased 836,000; pub
lic deposits decreased 4,856.000! notes
reserve decreased 973,000; sovernment
securities decreased 2,018,000. The
proportion of the bank's reserve to lia
bility this week Is 20,51 per cent: last
week It was 20.58 per cent. The rate of
discount Is 5 per cent.

Buying was for local accounts, but the financial district could find noth
ing special to explain the wide advance nnd activity. Prominent brokers,
however, Bald they believed the demand was. a belated response to the goqd
annual report issued about two weeks ago and confidence that thofcompany'B
outlook was bright.
Lake Superior Corporation was fairly active, but held steady and un
changed most of the day. General Asphalt common move1 up 1 point and
William Cramp certificates gained 2ii points on a light turnover.
Other changes were small and mixed. United Gas Improvement yielded
, Transit certificates a fraction and Lehigh Navigation , but Philadelphia
Electric and Storage Battery were unchanged.
Rails wero slow but Arm, and Steel common did little, but lost moro than
2 points.
Bonds were quiet and changes uninteresting.

New York, Feb. 27. The coffee mar
ket was easy during the late forenoon,
and, In the absence of nny aggressive
demand, prices declined, with September
Belling nt 13.70 or 15 points below last
night's closing level, while May sold at
14.60, or 5 points net lower.
The easier ruling of Santos futures
was probably a factor In the decline,
but trading was so quiet that verv small
orders affected prices nnd the fluctua
tions were hardly significant of nny

Judge Sullivan issued a peipetual In
junction restraining the treasurer of
Cook County from collecting more than
$324,000. A check for this amount vvas

may be sold for $100 a quart before

ported virtually no wines to this coun
try, and domestic champagne Is re
