Mother had Mary on her lap one day recently when a friend came to call. Naturally Friend began talking to tho baby, who smiled dlflldcritly and tried to hldo her faco. In order to mako her feel at home with the visitor, Mother picked up the book of bright pictures that Mary had dropped to the floor and said, "Oh, protty pussy." "Meow!" responded Mary quickly. Tho visitor was highly pleased and Mother much elated at having overcome the Bhy ness, and proceeded to show her trie pic tures, and Mary said "Wow-wow" and "Moo" and roared lustily for the lion. Urcer. of Itii-einunt "PSYCHIC PROPHET" STIRS PENN CAMPUS Sampler of Free, Very Free, Verse, Strangely Signed, Excite Students The Psj elite Prophet of Poetry has arrived on the campus of the University of Penn silvamn. That's the name ho calls himself, and nobody around tho University feclssafo In contradicting him. As jet the newcomer has been seen by no one; Indeed, he had never been heard of until this week, but from present indications he will soon be a Philadelphia as well as a colltgo celibrlty. So far nobody pretends to understand tho I'. P. of P., but, as they say In apology, "Nobody expects to understand the best of new poetry, and tho least Intelllglblo it Is the better." As ct only tin eo gems from the pen of this new ginlus have been discovered at Penn. All vi ere typewritten and two of them were unsigned, but at present students and faculty alike who aro lntereHed at all in the poetizing art ore on edgo with Impa tience for some new development. The Ilrst of the three poems was found In the farthest recess of the most retired al cove of the libiary. It appears to be. so general opinion agrees, the new poet's greet ing to Philadelphia, If, us Is thought, ho is a stranger from "climes unknown." Thus tho poet rhapsodizes on the clt of Penn: "IricaCable. irrefragable, irresponsible Thou! ,Srnini(nj7 f)ic U'alrr waves, A'breal: across the Utie-jyivrii aluac of predatory Pontics, Can we see the heart thee, Or onbj think ee seet As f7ic partlen snail yea, even the tiny giinten snail H'i'o eradliates the tuolluome hcafi or masticates 'J he prMeful pea, flees his reflation In the filmy ilee . ifoiu cuu (i Cosmfc Globoid Ullf" Somebody ut the. University was cruel enough to declare that this specimen of tho Cosmic Globold's varbe reminds him of a seed catalogue, but that Is unjust to the new genius. Second Mestage Discovered At tho other extreme of the campus, Just outsldo the door of Botanical Hall, tho sec ond mcisago from the P. P. of P., like the first, untitled and unsigned, was found late jesterday aftemoon. It nppears to be Intended as In honor of tho newly rushed freshmen, but no one has ns yet entirely deciphered It. This Is how tho poet sounds wheir he gets on subjects of local Interest: "Oh olow.na ones, most holly, brightly ylowlny ones I'anelful phantasies of a ftfvld, pftuiirus inaporlal Phenomenon lleware ! Tho snotes of winter, aje, the Ihiehest snows of The most xelntry winter Are as naught, or less than navyht beside WhaC will be befall You 1011 you, AeHul aroo(cs cannot suic nor jugger nauts avail H7ieii comes tho night The night of nights itself When jvfio rites entangle And you no longer art yourself, tho petted, patted, Friend of all the Oods, But only good, yea, alas, are only pood To fix the furnace." Poet Hints ut Identity This morning shortly before chapel, di rectly lu front of College Hall steps, a third Innocent piece of paper was discovered, this time capped with the fateful signature, Psychic Prophet of Poetry, and which con tained four short lines, written with tho usual direct and simplo Mgor of the new poetic genius. They are: " am that one luC not lie alone Most positively not, for he is not file ic .Wore (Iian 0 JJoIirv(fe yet not as much For Bolsheviks are such as one can see But I not so, most certainly not so ' am the wind that rustles down your neck As you standing waiting for tho p, j, x. NICHOLAS DOUTY IN LECTURE-RECITAL Interesting and Instructive Eve ning Gicn by Philadel phia Singer Nicholas Uouty gavo the second of his interesting and Instructive lecture-recitals beforo a large and Justifiably enthusiastic audience In Wltherspoon I lit 11 last evening, Tho seiles of three, which Mr. Douty Irf giving under tho auspices of the Unlversltj Hxtenslon Society. Is entitled "The poet and the Song," and the event of last evening treated of the poets of tho nineteenth en tury and tho music to which some ot this poetry is set. Mr. Iiouti 's tieattnent of his subject was not only interesting, but decidedly original. Ho first discussed the poet and tho place whlih has been awarded to him In perma nent literature. Then ho took up the specific poem which Is set to the song which he had chosen, although this poem Infrequently not of tho tjpe by which tho poet has won his permanent fame. Then, lu n few words, lie tells who the composer Is, a matter of great inteicst and Importance to those who are not so familiar, as is Mr. loulj. with the history of the song. As might bo expected from so thorough a inu.lcl.in as well us accomplished singer (ami the words are not ulwnvs svnouomous). Mr Douty's seleclloiiB of the songs to lllustiale the puciiis were of the best. They wero not nlwajs thoie which showed his voice anil style to tho best advantage, but they were tn every Instance, thoso which carried out to tho utmost the points which ho had made in the talk which preceded them. Thes In eluded songs from the classic und moilein Preach, German (classic onls ), Norwegian Kngllsh, American and Russian composers Mr. Douty was In exiellent voice and k.iiig all the songs with that artistry of technique and temperament which he nlwovs shows. Two of the selections were by Philadelphia composers, n charming setting of Words worth's "Daffodils" by Bills Clark Hammann nnd :i remnrkably beautiful work of Mr Douti's to Walt Whitman's "Twilight." Both ale compositions which compared fa vorably with any on the program, evin though It Included names such as Gounod. Liszt. C'hnusson, Glleg and Arenski. -Mr. Douty was obliged to repeat the songs of Gounod, Llilgey anil his own work. The de mands of the audience were perfecilj Justi fied as regards the lovely song of Gounod and Mr. Douty's own, but tho success of the Lldgey song was something of a mysterj. Despite the vigor of the melody tho altera tion of the disguised triplets seemed an un pardonable monotony. At tho close of the program, which rfas a line setting by Arensky to 11 poem in blank verse of Tourgenlcff entitled "Melodrama, which seemed, by the va, an Inadequate translation, Mr. Douty was so vigorouslj encored that he sang two of his own songs with lino effect, plavlng his own accompanl- tivntila Joseph W. Clarke was at the piano amiSi plajed the dllllcult nnd exacting accompani ments of the songs with tnsto und discretion, no easy matter when the fitting of the ac companiment and Its Importance hi the gen eral scheme of most of the songs to the vocal part In many of the numbers Is considered.
