BIG DELAWARE
TEAM AT PENN
.Tonight's . Visitors Have
Lost Only One Game
This Season
ALI TALL AND STRONG
Penn had better not take tonight's;
mJ basketball jatno with the Delaware Col-
' v lees quintet too easy. The Delaware
team Is coming here with the reputation
of being ths best team that ever has
represented the Institution. A lctory
irr the Red and Blue will mean as much
to them as the American League pen
nant -will to Connie Mack.
Delaware has only; sustained one de
feat this year, being beaten by Lehigh
on, the latter'n floor by a. ery close mar
gin. The only common opponent they
ava had with Penn Is Muhlenberg, and
they defeated this five by the score of 36
to 13, As Penn beat Muhlenberg by
about the Fame (core a close battle Is
looked forward to tonight,
Shipley Coach
The Delaware five Is being hoached
this year by Shipley, a former Uni
versity of Maryland basketball player.
The team Is composed of men who are
nearly alt six feet or over, and, despite
their bulk, are capable of placing a fast
game. They are led this year by Cap
tain Marstorf, who also plan n last
game at one of the guard posts.
Marston Is nbout the smallest mem
ber of this giant crew, but his ability
as a player Is unquestioned. Tlio Carter
brothers, whose positions aie forward
and guard, respectively, are' two players
who are counted on to kUo the Penn
Slayers quite a battle, for the previous
' games In which Delaware took part they
played a prominent part In the Ictorles.
Penn in Form
The Tenn five seems to have hit Its
stride, Judging from the Ietory over
Talo last Saturday, and the players have
regained the confidence that wns. lacking
when they first met Yale. Stannard,
whose work waH not up to standard, re
gained hlB old-tlmo form against Yale.
The work of Captain Davis at center
haa been noteworthy throughout the
season. 'Wolfe, of Penn State, and
Hamlll, of Ynle, both came to Philadel
phia with big reputations as players,
but Lardle succeeded In shutting them
both out, besides scoring a few peals
himself.
In a preliminary game the Penn
Freshmen will engage La Salle College.
La Salle has a good team this season.
The first-year men have not been beaten
this season, and they hope to keep their
record clean, Itoseanst and Springer
will be the forwards for the Freshmen,
Graves will Jump center, while BoyI
and Peters will hold down the guard
posts. '
The line-up for the varsity games Is as
, follows:
Pennsylvania Delaware College
Ntannard forward Alexander
Nweencr forward U. Carter
Davis.. renter. ... 11. McCnuihan
'Peck guard D. Carter
JIcNIchot guard Marston
RIVER WORK SATURDAY
Mild Weather Causes Penn to
Shift Practice
The mildness of the weather during
the last two weeks and the knowledge
that other colleges already are on the
water has caused Coach Joe Wright to
announce that the Penn crews will hold

The tentative varsity crew selected by
Wright follows:
.Stoke, Thomas ; No. 7, Wilson : Xo. 0,
Wlnslow ; No. E, Wilson : No. 4, Hup
vlee; No. 5! ltoberts; Xo. 2, Kellar, bow,
-Wies.
The seating of the freshman crew on
Saturday will probably be as follows:
Armstrong, stroko : Hoyelt, No. 7 ; Brad
enbury. No. 6 ; De aver. No. 5 ; Swan,
No. 4 : Garretson, Xo. 3 ; Miller. Xo. 2 :

ALL SPORT EVENTS
IN LOCAL SCHOOLS
President Wolf, of Board of
Education, Favors Physi
cal Training Over Inter
scholastic Events
STUDENTS WANT SPORTS
Uy PAUL PREP
INTpiLSCHOLASTia athletic activi
ties which at the present time form
such a great and Interesting part of the
average school boy's life may be done
away with entirely In a short time. This
much Is evident In the annual report,
which Kdwin Wolf, president of the
Board of Education, made yesterday.
lit thli report President Wolf stated
emphatically that more physical train
ing la desired In the local high schools.
There are two periods a week devoted
to this work lu each of the schools.
President Wolf, however, wants more",
and doesn't cure whether It comes be
fore, during or after school hours, Just
as long as the students receive the train.
lng.
Of course, If such a slight matter as !
Interschool sports should happen to In
terfere, the Interscholastln events must i
give way to physical training. Prcl-
dent Wolfs contention Is that with each
school .having "first teams" the average
student doesn't get enough physical
training. The only ones to benefit are
those who play on the "first teams."
to .Military training
1 resident Wolf, when Interviewed last
evening, said that If possible he would
like to have the physical training In the
ilUJ Z wlr.'Vi"1" a P,la,? ', u
Iar to that employed In the various mill-
tary camps. Not the drilling with guns
or bayonets, but the nthletlc program. In
which every one takes an active part.
This Is a splendid plan at: should be
encouraged. It would do the high school
students a world of good physically
Perhaps President Wolf, however, forgot
that virtually every army and navy
camp, with this extensive physical and
military training, still found time to
have "first teams." More than that,
they were represented by "second, third,
fourth nnd many times fifth teams."
Mutt Find Time
U should not he thought that Presi
dent Wolf Is anxious to see Interscho
lastlo events clbne away with. Such Is
not tlie case. He Is willing that they
continue, with the condition that the
students all get a thorough physical
training.
The only feasible way to make this
possible at present Is to make the extra
periods of physical tralnlpg compulsory
and to be taken during the regular
school hours. Many boys In tho high
schools find It necessary to work after
school and It would cause t,hem to dls
continue their studies If forced to train
after schools and thus lose their posi
tions. . , ,
It N not expected that the alumni,
students and athletic directors of the
various high schools will be In favor of
discontinuing Interscholastlo sport.
These games do more to promote school
and fighting spirit than a hundred pe
riods of physical training. It Is on that
athletlo field that the majority of the
best students In the schools are found.
