New York, Jan. 23. -The heaviness which prevailed In the Mock
market for nearly a ueek was changed In today's trading Into a display
of pronounced strength, with price movements Including advances rang
ing from 1 to G points In numerous Issues. There was a disposition to
attach significance to current reports that developments nro now pend
ing which may make n radical change In the railroad outlook, and there
was persistent buying of nearly nil the inllroad stocks throughout the
day. with those Issues making greater advances than any other group.
An Important feature of the market was that there was a demand In
evidence sulllelcnt to absorb offerings In large lohime, a condition that
was clearly demonstrated In t'nltrd Stales Steel common, that slock
being called on to stand a supply of about 25,000 shares In the early aft
ernoon on which Its price dropp.ed 1 point to S)f. but this telling was
absorbed without special effort and the slock later sold nt a new high
price for the day.
The greatest gain was made b St. Paul prefened, which rose (I
points to 73, but lost half this advance on 11 reaction before the close.
In some quarters an Idea prevailed that before the end of the month St.
Paul preferred may give a surprise similar to that uhU.li was caused In
Baltimore and Ohio common a short time ago.
Mexican Petroleum had Its usual wide range, llrst dropping 3 points
to 1G234, from which It rallied to above lfl7 Marine preferred dropped
to JS' and then rose to above 102.
The bond market was unsettled, with the fourth Liberty -l's telling
down to 9I.5S. The local traction issues were all In supply at declines
and man other bonds were under pressure

General Asphalt Issues Score Widely to New High Rec
ord Prices Tonopah-Behnont Develops Momen
tum and Makes Gain
Trading on the Philadelphia Stock Exchange today was on a larger
scale than has been recorded since the beslnnlns of the year, nnd the activity
and strength of a few leaders caused strength for nearly everything else
that nppared.
I.ako Superior Corporation attracted more Interest than any olhcr, home
Issue, becoming unusually active nnd advancing us much ns 1 points to
IS-, while the Oencral Asphalt Issues continued to show further activity
nnd strength. As was the case yesterday, the preferred gained more momen
tum than the common and moved up 26 points to a new top record of 94&,
whllo the common, on a moderate turnover, gained more than 1 point to B7U
Sllght recessions occurred after the high levels were reached, but there was
no Indication of weakness. , ' '
There was no news forthcoming to explain Superior's spurt, but the fact
that President Cunnltlgham returned recently from an inspection trip to the
company's steel plnnt at "Soo" was thought In some quarters to have been
responsible, His reports, on his return, were very encouraging as to the earn
ings' outlook and many traders have pointed out that, with good prospects
ahead, the price had been too low for some time.
Rapid Transit certificates developed fair activity hut were lower, Tono-pah-Bclmont
came out a little hjgher, but a large block sold at the previous
dosing price, while Philadelphia Electric held fairly steady and unchanged
on n good-sized turnover. Eectrlc Storage Battery was one of the few
Issues that declined. It lost 1 point, while United tins Improvement yielded
'i and Union Traction V,.
Ralls were firm, Pennsylvania advancing to 45 '4, Reading gaining nearly
1 point ex dividend, I.ehlgh Vulley Vt and Baltimore and Ohio 2 points. Their
rally followed closely that demonstrated on the big board.
Steel common was slow, but lower.
In tho bond division the activity of Lake Superior Income 53 and Thlla.
delphla Electric first 6s attracted most attention.
P. II R. and C. V. to Consolidate
( In connection with the last meeting of the board of directors of the
I Pennsylvania Railroad Company the following announcement is made:
I "As a further step toward consolidating the Pennsylvania Railroad sys
tem and simplifying its corporate organization, decision has been reached
to effect tho complete absorption by the Pennsylvania. Railroad Company
of the Cumberland Valley Railroad. This will be done 'by transferring to
the parent corporation direct ownership of the entire property and franchises
of tho Cumberland Valley Railroad, including all of Us rail lines and
equipment, as well as tho leases held by it. When the merger has been
completed the affairs of the Cumberland 'alley Railroad Company will be
wound up and Its corporate existence ended.
"The stockholders of tho Pennsylvania Railroad Company will be asked
to ratify tho merger at the annual meeting in Philadelphia m March i, 1919.
Tor the purpose of ratification by the stockholders of tho Cumberland Valley
Railroad Company a special meeting will be held at Chambersburg. Pa., In tho
near future."
