GENERAL ASPHALT COMMON
AND PREFERRED ADVANCE AGAIN (
Both Classes of Slock Reach New High Records on Phil--
adelphia Exchange and Business in Other Local f
Issues Is Quiet !
nr
Virtually nil Interest In today's Philadelphia. Stock Exchange trading cen
tered nfraln In General Asphalt common and preferred. Both classes of
stock advanced to new high records. The former -vm quite active and there
was a fair turnover of the preferred. The high level was reached around
midday, when common shares changed ham's at G6, "P 214 points from yestor
terday's final quotation, and the preferred advanced 1 point to 85V4. Iater the
common reacted on profit-taking.
There continued to be much discussion In the Street because of the
activity and strength of Asphalt stocknnd, although no definite news, wan
forthcomlng to explain the bullish position, one prominent broker said he
believed It was due to the manipulation of New Tork Interests who were un
loading with profits. Ho pointed to the recent activity of these Issues on
the Curb, which was continued today, as evidence that New Tork was much
Interested nnd It was also mentioned that much of the selling here came
from New Tork.
Other home stocks were neglected nnd price changes were generally
small and uninteresting.
Exceptions Included a li gain for Lehigh Navigation and a. 2-poInt ad.
vance for Penn National Bank warrants.
There was a fairly large turnover of Philadelphia Electric, but It held
steady nnd was unchanged most of the day.
Lake Superior showed no reflection of the earnings statement for six
months, and Tonopah-Belmont, on the December report, was active but un
changed after a slight recession.
Insurance Company of North America ex dividend advanced a little,
but was slow.
Steel did little but gained slightly.
The Lake Superior Corporation statement of operations covering six:
months ended December 31, 1918, shows 201,557 tons of finished steel produced
against 139,198 tons In the same period of 1917.
Net earnings of Tonopah-Belmont Development Company In December
were $37,600, as compared with 59,G38 In November. Net earnings of the
Jim Butler Company were $3353, against "2629 In November.
Preliminary estimate of net earnings of Belmont Surf Inlet for Decern,
ber was $32,000.
The annual report of the Lehigh Valley Transit Company for the fiscal
vcar ended November 30, 1918, showed cross earnings of $3,330,000. an In-
crease of $113,000. Total net income was $1,029,000, a decrease of $150,000. f
