GENERAL ASPHALT SHAKES
LEAD LOCAL STOCK TRADINQ
Common Soars More Than 3 Points to New High Rec
ord and Preferred Gains More Than 2 Lake
Superior Scores Gain
The outstanding fcattiro of today's trading on tho Philadelphia Stock
Bxchango was tho sensational strength of General Asphalt common and
preferred. Although the market was broader than It has been since the
beslnnlnn; of tho new year, transactlona for cither stocks wero largely In
small, odd lots and price movements attracted llttlo attention.
Asphalt common was acUvo throur-hout tho session and at the close
htul advanced S points over Tuesdays closing quotation to 45, the highest
level ever reached, while the preferred Rained 2 points to 78, tho top
since 1914, although much less actlvo than tho common. Naturally the wide
advance for these stocks caused much discussion In 'the Street, and, while
there was no definite news forthcoming to explain the sudden strength, it
was the general opinion In the financial district that It was due to the firm,
ness of oils as a whole as well as to larger business assured by road-bulldlng
programs In many parts of tho country. '
Lake Superior was fairly active and advanced , Philadelphia Electric
reacted to Its previous level nfter scoring a small gain, and Lehigh Navl
gatlon, although showing llttlo momentum, was marked u pa good-slzed frac
tion. Tonopah Mining dropped slightly, Cramps advanced 1, Union Trac
tion H, but United Gas Improvement, Electric Storage Battery and nearly
all other home Issues that appeared wero dealt In moderately and held about
steady and unchanged.
Steel common was slow and lower, following tho trend on tho big board,
after gaining early In tho day. Baldwin, on the other hand, remained up U.
Ralls did Uttle, and whllo Reading Company and Lchelgh Valley wero
higher, Pennsylvania jlelded a small fraction.
The feature in bond trading was the activity of Reading gnecral 4s,
which declined to SC. Philadelphia Electric first 3s gained 2 per cent to 97.

3Ir. A is a notably successful manufacturer. He en
joys a ivide reputation as beinjr able, progressive, conserva
tive. Why? His plant keeps running to full capacity
through an efficient selling organization. His salesmen are
active continuously, even though business is offered freely,
securing it with least resistance and expense. When it is
slow, they fight for and get their share.
A pays cash for raw material, hence gets best quality
and lowest prices a preference over competitors. He takes
advantage of all discounts; everybody wants his business.
He ships promptly and worries over no embargoes. He gets
top prices for goods, because he employs the best-labor and
materials and pays good wages. He has no labor troubles.
How does A obtain these results and his reputation?
By using tho prompt, dependable, confidential'service of the
Manufacturers' Finance Company. So should you.
We buy your accounts receivable (not past due) nnd all
shipments as they are made. At once your business is on a
cash basis, and your working capital is in hand. You col
lect all accounts sold. You retain your full identity with
customers; relations are not disturbed.
Evidence of accouht with us is merely a duplicate invoice
showing terms and conditions of sale, with bill-of-lading
delivery ticket or express receipt attached. You are not
obligated for volume. Use our service only as needed
