Sergeant Major Herkert was wrapped

division. He firmly believed that It was
tho peer of any of tho units In the
American army, nnd that Its exploits
would live forever In song and story.
He always referred to his "outfit" as
llio "Glorious Fighting- Fourth," and
milled that he would ncvur cease, to be
thankful that ho had been privileged

Before Joining tho colors Sergeant
Major Herkert was the prlvato secretary
of the president cf tho II. W. Butter
worth & Sons Company, manufacturers
of textile machinery. Ho was a mem
ber of tho Church of St. Judo and the
Nativity. Tho younc holdler was the
only child of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Herkert.

Private Leonard Joseph, wounded. Is

Corporal Charles It. Clifton, wounded
stated In a recent letter that he hud
been amply repaid for his wounds, as
prior to his being hit he had managed
to add three moro dead Hermans to his
list. He had been able to get them
through the aid of a field glass taken
from a prisoner. In the same letter he
writes. "I am not tooting my own horn
In speaking about medals, as 1 am the
recipient of ono given to me by a dying
Frenchman whom I pulled out of a burn
ing tank." Clifton Is twenty years old
and son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Clifton,
2011 Woodstock tdrcet. He Is a mem
ber of Company D. 315th Infantry. He
was a carpenter by trade.
1'rtvato LeEoy Iiobbs, otllclally re
ported missing since September 26 has
written to an aunt, Mrs. J. K. Vandor-illce-
3909 North Hlshth street with
whom he made his home, that he Is In
the best of health and expects to re
turn home soon. It Is probable that
he was slightly wounded and taken to
a French hospital for treatment W hen
he failed to report for rollcall on Sep
tember 27, his regimental Intelligence
officer listed him as missing and, owing
to the poorly devls d system fT handling
the casualty rolls, the supp'ementary
statement that he h"d rejoined his com
pany has never succeeded In -ive hauling
tho original erroneous notification.
rrlvate Harry Shcvlln. wounded the
latter part of October, was much Im
proved by November 7, when he wrote
to a friend In this c'ty that he expected
to Ir iVcharged from the hospital soon.
He joined the colors September 14 1917,
wan trained at Camp Lee and Camp
fJonlon and went overseas with Company
B, 327th Infantry After reaching
France he was transferred to th head
quarters company nnd Mas with that
unit when Injured at the battlo of the
Meuse. Frivnte Shevlln made his home
at 1922 North Franklin street.
Sergeant James Moran tiarrlih,
woundeil on September 30. Is a native
of North Carolina, but had been living
In Philadelphia for a number of years

His famllv was much upset, for they
realized that evidently he had been
camouflaging n bit about his condition,
and, as he had invariably ended all his
letters with tho laconic statement,
"Everything O. K.." began to wonder
how many times he had been Injured.
Still thev felt that If ho was able to
write a letter on November 24 and had
been wounded on September 29, nearly
two months before that date, he had
probably entirely recovered from his In
jury, then they cheered up consider
ably and began to appreciate ine
thoughtfulness of the young soldier In
trying to spare his mother's feelings.
Comoral Tlnncy Is twenty-four years
old. was drafted In September of 1917,
trained at Camp Meade, assigned to
Company C, 315th Infnntry, and sent to
France in July last. He was an actor
bv profession and would have been on
the road this bason with a musical com
edy company If the war had not Inter
vened. Ho made his home with his
parents. Mr. and Mrs. George Tinney,
at 259 West Diamond street.
Private James llogan. officially re
ported as missing slnco November 9, had
evidently returned to his own "outfit"
bo soon after that date that he did not
consider his absence worthy of mention
In writing to his family on November
10. He was drafted In May, given a
hrlef but Intensive training at Camp
Meade and went to France as a member

rounded, was a resident of Chicago and
was drafted In that city. He gave as
'its emergency address, however, tho
homo of his sister, who resided at 2832
Ridge avenue. She died during the In
fluenza epidemic, and so far as the War
Department can discover Golden has no
other relatives.
Private Thomas .1. O'Brien, Company
F. tl5th Infantry, was wounded In ac
tion September 28, according to an ofll
lal notlLp received by his parents, who
live at 4727 Unibrla street, Matiayunlt,
i few days ago. A letter, however, dated
October 10, Hays th.it ho was HI for a
while, but had recovered. He was
drafted a year ago, trained at Camp
Meade and has been In Franco since
May.
Private Frederick llenser, wounded,
I" twenty-one years old and a member
of Dattery D. 108th Machlnc-Gun Bat
talion. He enlisted at the outbreak of
war, and following a i-liort training pe
riod on the outskirts of Philadelphia was
sent to Camp Hancock for Intensive
training and embarked with the Haln
bow Division In July. A telegram from
the War Department slates that he was
wounded on October 6, but a recent
letter from the young soldier himself In
forms his famllv that hybrid returned to
his regiment. He received his education
at Temple University and was formerly
employed us a clerk by the Bell Tcle
l.ho"e Company.

responded to a draft call and fought
side bv side with America's own on tho
battlefields of France. Tho Government
telegram baIng that ho had been se
verely wounded In action came to Mrs.
Cornelia Foglla, 187 West Logan street,
where Hlonaldl boarded prior to going
to camp. He had lived In this city about
six years when summoned to join the
colors.

According to a telegram to his mother,

A few- days later a letter arrived from
the young soldier that ho had been bad
ly wounded, but after an operation had
fully recovered. He explained that ho
had waited until all danger was past
beforo writing her, as ho did not want
her to worry about him. Before Prl

employed as a dispatch clerk by tho Fin
Icy Acker Company.
