New York, Dee. 16.
The stock market today was a nominal affair, except for pool activi
ties In somo of tho specialties.
The oil stocks demanded most attention, because of the withdrawal of
restrictions on petroleum output, and there wai ti;orous buying of all tho
stocks In that group, with most Importance attached to tho demand for
Sinclair Oil, which has been lagging behind the remainder of this group,
but which some Interests .are quietly absorbing.
Tho widest movement was In Royul Dutch, which gained more than
6 points to 106 in connection with an advance of 4 points on the Curb
In the new Itoyal Dutch stocks In anticipation of the delivery of the new
shares tomorrow.
American Sumatra Tobacco advanced moro than 2 points to 99 and
Distillers had an advance of more th.in 1 point to 51. '
The trading In the standard issues was comparatively small, and
movements of these stocks were narrow, but they .were In scant supply
generally, especially United States Steel common, which ranged from
9," to 96.
Other steel industrials followed it closely on this movement.
t'tnh Copper was weak for a time in the morning, dropping more
than 2 points, after selling ex dividend at the opening.
The strength in the leading stocks was duo chiefly to the fact that
nearly all these Issues have been oversold and that an extensive short
account has been created in them.
There was a steudy tone generally to the bond market, without ma
terial changes in the prices. Liberty issues were heavily traded in at
around previously prevailing prices.

Becomes Active and Advances More Than vOne, Point.
Philadelphia Electric and Lake Superior Decline.
Rails Ar6 Irregular .
11
Activity in today's Philadelphia stock market was ,connned to a few
issues and price "changes wero irregular. Following the uncertain trend on
the big board, nervousness was in evidence here and business was extremely
small previous to midday. Later On, however, "a few of the usual home lead
ers became fairly actlv but with the sentiment mixed.
General Asphalt common was prominent, showing Increasing demand and
it advanced moro than 1 point to 38, while Lake Superior Corporation, on
moderate trading, lost , and Philadelphia Elec, trlc stock, which showed
good momentum, yielded and that company's warrants dropped) 'to' H,
only half ther price at which they sold Saturdaj'. United Companies, of New
Jersey, usually inactive, advanced 2 points on a trifling sale, the first re
cordfi'd in a long time. '
Business In other home, issues was smallNind uninteresting. Lehigh
Navigation, Insurance Company of North America and Pennsylvania Salt' '.
all appeared unchanged, while New York Railways dropped "i on a block'
transaction,
. Rails were slow and irregular. Pennsylvania was slightly off, Lehigh
Valley and Mlnehlll were unchanged, 'Buffalo and Susquehanna certificates
advanced 1 point and Huntingdon and Broad Top was marked up .
Bond business was fairly broad, with an advance of 1 per cent for
Philadelphia Company flrpt 5s attracting most interest.

Issued bj the Federal Pepar'ment of
Agriculture. There was a good mixed
trade.
At the start, the tone of nearby
futures was easier, while May showed
comparative strength. An oversold con
dition developed. Buying by commis
sion houses forced Bhorts to cover, and
a sharp upturn followed. When the re
port of the Government wns published,
offerings became freer and the gains
were lost. ,
The condition of winter wheat on De-'
cember 1. was placed at 98.5 and the ,
area sown at 49,027.000 acres, or 15.9 ;
per cent more than tho revised acreage
of 1917. Private authorities put the
jleld of winter wheat at 760.000,000
busneis, against ooo,i-y,uuu uusnua
harvested this ear
The remendous acreage put into
winter wheat led many to expect a
smaller area of corn next season. Re
ports that the Food Administration will ,
make no further purchases of flour sub
stltutcs were denied. Unsettled weather
was predicted for the West.
Oats were weaker on a report that
the Wheat Exports Corporation had
was stronger.
