New York, Dec. 14.
Tho stock market showed an uncertain tone In the half-day with
which the week ended, with some Issues moklnp advances, but most
Interest was attached to the continued weakness jn all the traction
securities.
The general understanding Is that there can be only' one solution for
the transportation troubles In this city and recolvershlp was clearly men
tioned, oven 'by the executive officers of Intcrborough Consolidated, as
being In prospect unless tho situation Is relieved by Increased fares.
Intcrborough Consolidated U1I3 morning sold down to below 25, mak
ing a now low record, and Brooklyn Rapid Transit sold at 32',4, the lowest
prlco touched since 1907, and a new low record since tho stock was placed
on the dividend list.
The bonds of the two corporations were also heavy and soM at new
low records.
The Interborough refunding Bs, which have suffered with other Issues
on this collapse In values, nre really In a strong position, having prior
rights to the entire rapid transit system, coming ahead not oply of the
municipal debt, but must also be provided for before tho Intcrboroufih
stock can receive oi e cent in debt.
Trading in the general list was quiet, with some recessions at the
opening followed by upturns before the close, but dealings were so pro
fessional in character that 'these movements wero without the slightest
significance.
Tho pool manipulation made a couple of stocks show moderate gains,
but tho majority of usually active Issues recorded only trifling variations
In prices -as a result of the two hours' trading.
Tho bond market was generally heavy, because of tho continued largo
supply of tho Liberty Bonds.
Inter-Met Issues were again heavy, with collateral 4s sustaining a
further loss.
PRESSURE BY BEARS
WEAKENS CORN PRICES
Prospects of Better Weather
Cause Fairly General Selling.
Oats Arc Easier
Chicago, Dec 14.
Prospects for better weather, which
led to talk that receipts would Increase,
caused fairly general nelllng of corn by
commission houses and pressure by bears
this morning, and tho market weakened.
Stop-loss orders wero reached as prices
descended.
Tho trade took a bearish view of the
technical position on the theory that
shorts had covered extensively on yes
terday's rise.
January opened at Sl.38 to J1.37?.
agalnBt $1.38Vi at tho end yesterday,
but affer touching $1.36 rallied to
$1.37 U. March started at J1.3GT4.
against ?l-37 at tho end yesterday,
but after receding to J1.36U Improved
to $1.36. May was quoted at $1.37
to,$1.38Vi'at tho outset, compared with
$1.38ai, yesterday's last price, and after
selling at $1.37 moved up to $1.37'4.
The arrivals here today were 123 earn.
Prlvato cables from Argentina said
that foreign Interests wero buying there,
although farmers wero asking stlffcr
prices, owing to the smaller yield In
the United States.
Oats were easier In sympathy with
corn. There waa fairly general selling,
by commission houses and by local in
terests. The news was not particularly
bearish, although clear and coluoi
weather was Indicated and this would
bo excellent for the movement,
January opened at 7-HsC to 731ic,
against 74 o at the end yesterday.
March started at"74o to 73 c, against
74 He at the close yesterday. May
opened at 74 Vic, a decline of He. The

Bullish spot and shipping news and a
moro favorable statement on tho con
sumption of tho staple last month by
the Census Bureau than had been ex
pected stiffened the cotton market to
day. Pront-taklng was responsible for a
setback in tho middle of the session,
but the demand was good and the move
ment upward was resumed.
Sluch interest was attached to a
statement Issued by Representative Hef
flin, of tho House Committee on Agri
culture, asserting that the Federal De
partment of Agriculture had overesti
mated tho 1918 crop by at least 600,000
bales.
Prlvato dispatches from the South re
ported a largo Inquiry for the actual
artlclo from all quarters, with holders
firm.
Tho reaction carried prices off at the
maximum about 25 to 30 points, but
on a scale-down demand from the trada
Increased,
Near the close buying became more
general and prices made new highs for
the day. Tito market was finally steady
at a net advance of 30 058 points.

IXXIE Is no more! Hm. hm.
Minnie has flown the coop she has
left and we did not part friends.
This in how It happened Miss Sloan
said she called after me as I was going
down tho elevator with that prospective
salesman.
When I got to the office this morning
she was there with tears in her eyes.
"Oh! Mr. Flint, why didn't you come
back when I called you last nlght7"
"I didn't hear you call me!"
"Yes, I did ; you were with that sales
man that was here last night."
"Which one 7" I asked, for there was
such a swarm of them in that I nat
urally did not know which one she
meant
"The last one, the one that you went
out with."
"Tho one that is cpmlng back today !"
"Coming back nothing!" she sniffed.
'Ho won't come back he stole my
handbag."
"Nonsense," I said.
"Nonsense nothing," sho said. "He put
all those little parcels on my bag and
when he picked them up he took my
bag along. 1 I had six dollars In it, a
vanity set and a lot of other things.
Yes, and I had a packago of gum that
I hadn't broken Into."
"Well, he will be back this morning
and when he comes he will bring it
back."
I went out of the office until 11:30, to
see If I could dig up a few prospects,
but I had no luck.
When I came back. Miss Sloan had
evidently been thinking things over, for
hardly had I got Into the office when she
said:
"That man has not been In nnd you
will have to make good my loss!"
"I will do no such thing. If you
can't look after your own bag, I can't
do It for you!"
"It was stolen In your office. If you
hae men coming Into your office that
you can't trust,. It is not my fault."
Then I got mad nnd gave her the
money and told her to beat It.
At first she refused to take It and
said she would not leave until eho got
$45 $15 for salary, $15 In lieu of a
week's notice and $15 for the bag that
the salesman stole.
"All right, my gal," said I. and made
us if to put the $16 In my pocket.
She grabbed It up and Bald, "I will
take that, but you will hear from me
don't worry' J'ou will hear from
And as she disappeared down the hall
she still kept repeating, "You will hear
from me."
I want (o sell ten lots a week, and I
haven't a certainty of selling a single
lot and no chances for selling any next
weelc either.
It was only when It was too lato to
get an ad Into the Sunday papers that I
thought of advertising for prospects.
Gee whiz! I wonder why I always
manage to think of things when It Is
too late?
I was talking It all over with Francis
this cenlng and asked him what was
the trouble.
Francis pulled a gnmace ana said:
"You haven't produced much results this
week, have ypu? Suppose you had spent
the first part of tne weeK in planning
what vou would do and then the latter
part of the week In following out these
plans. Don't jou think you would hao
gone lurtner-'

In any kind of an executive capnclty, has
got to do more thinking than doing."
