Cooper were Riven today by tho crew
of the American steamship Cas crn
Star, which Is anchored here.
Oincers and men of the Cooper were
tossed about In tho storm for two las
before they were slRhtcd by tho East
ern Star. The Cooper was near by
sunk almost to her deck level and dis
mantled by the storm Only her cargo
of lumber kept licr afloat.
"We sighted tho crew of the Cooper
about 250 miles off Cnpe Hatteras," de
clared a member of the crew. "They
had abandoned tho schooner nnd had
taken to open boats.
"For two days the skipper of the
Cooper and his men battled against a
heavy sea, expecting momentarily to be
swamped They had little food and
water, hut fortunately we arrived be
fore their supply had become ex
hausted." Tho Cooper, a three-masted schooner,
was built at Seaford, Delaware, nnd
wus formerly owned and in command
of Captain Beauchamp, of lla'tlmore,
who sold her recently to S. J. Murphy, of
Gulfport, Miss.
Gloucester Water Rates to Rise
Water rates In Gloucester are to he
raised sufficiently to make the uiiinr
works self-supporting. This was deter
mined last night at a meeting of the
City Councils. The present minimum
rate of $2.50 probably will be Increased
to $10. The new I'uey & Jones ship,
yard village on the outskirts of Glou
cester also will be supplied by the water

losing about $10,000 a year for tho List

Washington. Dec 0. The Rockefellers
contributed $35,000 to the Republican
campaign fund this year. John D.. St.,
giving $20,000 and John !.. Jr., $15,000
Th v and four others contributed a total
of $135,000, or nearly one-eighth of the
total campaign receipts. William Boyce
Thompson, of Yonkers, matched them
with $33,000: T C du Tom, of New
York, and J. J McG-aw, of Ponca City,

strength. No orders have as yet been
recehed by camp officials as to the work
they are to perform, but It Is expected
that they will take over most of the
guard duty, as nearly all the depot
brigade men will bo discharged
Tho announcement that Dlx, with tho
twenty-nllic other camps. Is to be re
tained as a demobilization ramp, will
mean that It uUl be used principally by
overseas troops, as there aie few men
from other nearby sections who will
como here. Only those men will be dis
charged who are within 350 miles of tho
point of their entrance Into tho military
service. All other white men will he
formed Into detachments, as wero the
colored soldiers, and sent for discharge
to tho camp in the State from which they
came. A proper proportion of olllcers,
preferably from the s.imo locality, wilt
be sent with each detachment.
